Where to Get Modafinil – Bulletproof Readers Chime In

Earlier this week ABC World News did a segment about how healthy people use Provigil as a biohack to increase productivity. I was one of the few willing to connect my name with their story.

Many people have asked where and how to get Provigil or Modafinil. It is usually available by prescription, with more details about that in the Provigil Q&A post. I sifted through comments on the posts on this topic in Facebook, Twitter, and the blog to find what resources you have recommended to each other.

Reader suggestions:

  1. Sun Pharma: which appears to be an Indian pharmaceutical company with no link for purchase.
  2.  Gwren.net: the website in general appears to be a collection of data sources, their discussion of the grey market is at the bottom.
  3. The Modafinil Store: aptly named and to the point.  Modafinal is the generic name for Provigil.
  4. My Modafinal: also aptly named and to the point.
  5. One reader suggested reading the DSM-IV before seeing a psychiatrist.
  6. A few others have said the Nuvigil is more expensive, more effective and less well studied.

I’ve never used any of these methods, so I have no idea how reliable they are. I do not endorse these sites or have a business relationship. You should get a prescription from your doctor before getting any prescription drug… even though some of these sites may not require one.

Whether or not you decide to use Provigil depends on what your goals are and risk tolerance is.  As a biohacker my goal in everything is to hack the human experience so that I am getting the most out of life– in productivity, being fully present, and being able to step up to the plate every single time, without harming my longevity.  Maintaining my hardware through a super-fine tuned diet is the first step.  Other steps include optimizing performance through supplemental enhancement, sleep hygiene, managing stress, bio-feedback, training intelligence and moving provide additional life enhancements.

Everything you do is a trade-off. I believe that the trade-off for performance and quality of life versus potential but undefined risk for modafinil is well worth it for me.  I work on the cutting edge of research and theory, some of the stuff I do is in the early stages of testing or is off-label use, and I’m confident in my research abilities to determine that it is safe enough to try it on myself and use what works.  When it works for me, I share it. Everyone has a different risk tolerance, start small, when something works, try something else and go from there.  The lowest risk, and first reward for many people is the Bulletproof diet.

As a reminder, I am not a physician, I am a biohacker experimenting at my own risk.  disclaimer

What are some of the self-experiments that work for you?  What are some of your favorite biohacks?  How do you gauge risk-reward?

Thanks for the list Dave. Please let us know if you try Nuvigil. It’s being marketed as the “better” version, but how much of that is due to marketing and the fact that Cephalon no longer controls Modafinil and it’s now available as a generic (as of this year, I think)?

    • Phil

TL, I received a sample of Nuvigil from myModafinil.com with my last order upon my request. I have only had one tablet at this point, but I found it had little to no effect. I will test it again tomorrow and get back to you.

      • Dave Asprey

That would be a bummer if it was no good. I’m looking forward to your report!

        • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

Guys, will be testing it over the next 24 hours. To my understanding a single tablet from myModafinil of Nuvigil is the equivilant of 300mg of Modafinil, so I will take half a tablet to compare it. I will let you know how I go!

Dave, as a 27 year old, do you think the benefits of your new product, Upgraded Aging are worthwhile?

        • golooraam

How did your half pill experiment go?

        • Lou

This is getting very suspenseful. Would love to know if it worked.

        • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

Sorry for the delayed response. Funnily, the lack of response is somewhat an answer in itself. For some reason I do not notice any effect from the Nuvigil I received alongside the Modafinil from myModafinil. I would presume that either I am one of the people who is unaffected (unlikely due to the effectiveness of Modafinil), or I am taking an incorrect dosage. I took half a tablet, which to my understanding is around 3/4 of a Modafinil tablet.

Not sure if Miss Modafinil has anything to contribute regarding it?

        • ryan

I thought nuvigil has not gone generic? how does mymodafinil sells a generic nuvigil? (armodafinil)

        • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

          Ryan,

It is actually Waklert (Armodafinil). It is not the Cephalon brand, but Sun Pharma, the same people who make Modalert (Modafinil).

          Running out of space….

        • Andrew Nakamura

Wanted to reply to this just to see how it looks lol

        • Ikez78

Does this stuff cause hair loss for anyone?

        • Carlos Reyes Jr

will like to know about this to

        • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

Negative. Whilst I am sure this is unrelated, I have actually grown additional hair in the last 12 months since becoming more Bulletproof.

  • Lou

    Hi Phil,

I looked at that site as well. Please let us know if the Modafinil you purchased worked or not after a few days. Thanks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

      Lou,

The Modafinil is excellent from myModafinil, well priced and easy. I would recommend. I received my package in around 9 days, but I am in Australia, so it is closer to the origin (India).

    Is the Mymodafinil.com website down?

    • http://twitter.com/myModafinil Miss Modafinil

Hey, I’m running myModafinil. We are currently moving servers, the website will be back up in a couple of hours. Apologies for the inconvenience, and in the meantime do let me know if you have any questions. Cheers!

  • Michael Attanasio

I have ordered Modafinil from MyModafinil before. It took 14 days to arrive in the US. It definitely has an effect on me – it literally eliminates sleepiness for about 12-14 hours. It also has a stimulating effect that is somewhere between caffeine and adderall/ritalin but closer to caffeine.

For comparison’s sake and so you can understand my experiences better: I am a male, 145lb, 5′ 9″ and a whole 200mg pill was a bit much so I usually take 100mg. I get a bit of a hangover effect from it where I sleep crappy and feel somewhat low on energy the next day. I am also generally very stimulant sensitive. I follow the Bulletproof Diet pretty damn closely and in particular I absolutely avoid corn, wheat, gluten, and refined grains in general. I exercise regularly and am in lean-to-fit shape. Supposedly some people are “non-responders”.

I think the CBS video over exaggerated Modafinil. It is GREAT at what it does (sleep elimination) but it will not make me (or anyone I know who takes it) able to sit down and write code for hours on end. I am currently studying for the MCATs and when I take it, it has very little effect on my ability to study well and on my ability to study for a long time. I find that 200mg caffeine with 200mg L-Theanine and 1-3g Piracetam makes a much better study aid. As I said Modafinil IS, HOWEVER, absolutely unbeatable for low amounts of sleep, however. I slept four hours one night and popped a Modafinil and hit my snooze button. When the alarm went off again (at about 7:30AM) I popped up out of bed and was not tired until 10-11PM that evening. Modafinil also gives me a bit of a buzz (probably because it causes some dopamine release). I could see this buzz being slightly addictive but it is NOTHING like adderall or ritalin.

Overall Modafinil is GREAT for maybe a couple times a week but I highly suggest against using it often as tolerance (to the stimulating effects at least) are known to build quickly (though not to the anti-sleep effects). Also do NOT take before you plan to go to bed because you won’t. You literally can’t sleep on this stuff. If anyone has any questions about my experiences feel free to respond and I will answer as best I can.

Also DAVE – do you know how to avoid a Modafinil “hangover” or at least blunt it? I already eat a Bulletproof diet and exercise regularly (but not too much!).

    • Lou

      Hi Michael,

Thanks for the informative post. Always great to hear someone’s unbiased experiences.
      My questions are these:
      1. What is a modafinil hang-over, exactly?
      and
      2. I do a lot of writing for work — not code, but creative writing and articles, proposals, etc. Probably more stimulating than writing code, but still easy to procrastinate. Do you think Modafinil helps with sitting down and getting the work done?

      Thanks so much.

      • Michael Attanasio

        Hey, happy to help!
        1) I feel a bit of a malaise the day after taking it and have trouble sleeping for a couple of days. I noticed this effect in doses as low as 50mg (1/4 standard dose). I am very stimulant-sensitive, however.
        2) I think that Modafinil will definitely help you at first but tolerance is quick to build to all of Modafinil’s effects (EXCEPT for anti-sleeping, no tolerance there for me yet and this seems to be the consensus).

Modafinil isn’t meant to be a stimulant, it is meant to keep you awake (it is, but that isn’t its purpose). It is GREAT at what it is meant to do but OK at best otherwise. At $1.50/pill from MyModafinil.com it is a good deal… $1.50 to be free of sleep for a whole day and slightly improved otherwise. I would try it and see for yourself.

The best anecdote I can offer is: Every person I know (there are many) who tried Modafinil for anti-sleep purposes has been extremely satisfied. Every person I know who has tried Modafinil for any other purpose has been disappointed.

        • Lou

Thanks for you candor, Michael. Very helpful.

        • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

          Good contribution Michael.

Interestingly, the effects Modafinil had on me are quite different.

          1. I found I was able to sleep if desired at any point. To test, I even took half a tablet at 21:00 and went to bed at 23:00 fine. The difference was, I had no desire to sleep.

          2. I wouldn’t compare my feeling to the effects of caffeine at all. It produced no jittery feeling, rather just an improved clarity, even a sense of calm which allowed for deeper concentration.

          3. I didn’t code for 12 hours straight, but I certainly have worked on complex networking issues (Own a cloud computing company) for around 12 hours and produced high quality output. I haven’t really used Noopept or Aniracetam yet though, so I cannot compare.

          4. Unless I am mistaken, based on Dave’s continued use of it for 8 years almost daily (Correct me if I’m wrong), I was under the impression you do not build a tolerance as such to Modafinil.

          5. Regarding the Modafinil hangovers, my advice is this: Stay Bulletproof. If you start your morning after with your base supplements, have a protein shake or BP coffee and eat well throughout the day, I have found little to no after-effects. When I don’t do this I feel groggy.

As a background on me, I am 5’7″, 147 pounds, athletic gym going and particularly stimulant insensitive. I also Bulletproof Diet, avoid gluten 95% of the time and exercise infrequently (3 times a week for 30 minutes).

I would recommend trying myModafinil as they are personal, quick and well priced. Most importantly, they are reliable, even offering to ship your package again if you don’t get it the first time.

          Hope this helps!

    • Shashi

Hey Micheal I am studying for the MCAT as well with a full time job. The stack your taking I assume helps you study well and for long periods. If this is correct have you tried substituting a cup of coffee for the caffeine pill? Have you tried Aniracetam ? Interested in the effects. I usually get up at 5AM and study till 8 or 11AM depending on my work schedule and then again before bed. Looking for he optimal stack in the morning. Thanks for your post.

  • Marcel

MyModafinil is great. Reliable and they’ve got real Modafinil. So i’ve ordererd two times from them now and both times the pills where good. I like Modafinil better than Armodafinil though.

@Dave, the comments in comments plugin you’re using looks very shitty at the bottom, you can barely read what people are responding. Just to make UX better i would switch to a different plugin or code a new one :-)

    Keep up the good work.

    • Matt

Have you made any recent orders from that site?

  • http://twitter.com/gailagilbert Gail Gilbert

I ordered modinifil from MyModinifil.com on Friday. They charged my credit card on Monday and sent me a confirmation of shipping email with a tracking number on Monday as well. The tracking number is not registering yet but the email states that it may take up to 48 hours, which would be tomorrow at this time. I will keep you all posted on the progress of the package and the quality of the modinifil. I hope I have a happy ending for you.

    • http://www.facebook.com/philgeorge Phil George

It takes ages to register for tracking on their website! But it gets there.

    • http://twitter.com/gailagilbert Gail Gilbert

It is now in Mumbai and being tracked…

    • http://twitter.com/gailagilbert Gail Gilbert

It is now in US Customs…

      • Damond

        Did you get it yet?

    • Adam B

Hey Gail, did you try the Modalert? I tried it this morning with my girlfriend and we both noticed very little change. Is it possible this is a bad supplier?

      • Adam B

To elaborate, started first thing this morning with 200mg. Did not feel any noticeable affect all morning, reading that sometimes people need a higher dosage and because I am a larger than average person (225lb, 6’5′ athletic) I tried another 200mg at 1pm. It’s 4:30pm now and I still haven’t noticed any change at all from the norm.

I did get less sleep than usual last night, so it’s possible that my sleep deprivation is affecting the nootropic affects, but I’ve still felt fairly tired all day which is surprising at 400mg.

Does anyone have an alternative for shipping to The Netherlands? My Modafinal doesn’t ship to certain parts of Europe.

    • Lloyd

Where specifically in the Netherlands? Holland? Armodafinil will reliably make it through customs (unlike Modafinil which is more tightly controlled). This site has a screen capture of their orders arriving safely in Holland, although it did take a full three weeks from India:
      https://www.armodafinilnow.in/delivery-of-armodafinil/

  • Noah

Fml I made an order with mymodafinil, never received my order and my bank has told me the card I used has been cloned, with several fraudulent purchases being made from Europe. I’m in canada btw.

    • andrew

how did you make an order with them? im in canada and they didnt even have a shipping option for canada

    • Zac

You say your card has been cloned, but their website only allows for Paypal. Would you care to elaborate?

    • joe

Mymodafinil is down. I did however find https://mymodafinil.net/. They crossed out the “.com” on their site, so looks like they may have moved the site to the new domain. Their site mentions this too. The old domain is pointing to godaddy name servers NS1.SUSPENDED-FOR.SPAM-AND-ABUSE.COM.

  • andrew

mymodafinil seems cheap and deffinately trustworthy… they have an option to ship to practically every country but canada, i dont understand why… Anyone in canada know of a reputable online source?

  • SophieE

I’ve tried the sunpharma and modavigil stuff. Effective. I have ADHD and this stuff is way better than Concerta or Ritalin, which used to hyperfocus my attention, make my heart race, make my skin feel like it wasnt mine, make me attribute intention to sounds (my own footsteps following me, the sound of a door closing being imperative etc), make me socially awkward and give me a really bad come down.

Like another commenter though, I can’t get to sleep that night and get a really crappy “hangover” the next day. I don’t want to move, my heart pounds, I feel nauseous and there is pressure behind my eyes. Any hacks? I also get ridiculously thirsty on the day that I’m taking the modafinil and lose my appetite almost completely (don’t really care about the appetite thing since I don’t take it daily).

This morning, the only thing I could think of stomaching was coconut milk (additive free and from a bpa-free carton) with a TBS of low-toxin cocoa, cocoa butter and vanilla powder (Unfortunately, I have an incredible aversion to coffee and the smell of coffee- there must be some event in my life which somehow links that smell with illness, hospitals and diarrhea- yeh very random, I don’t know why I have this association but it is very strong). My coconut milk “hot chocolate” seemed to settle my stomach but I still have a headache and am very dizzy and feel lazy. I also had a big cup of fresh lemon balm and chammomile tea with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, which quenched my insatiable thirst more than water.

    • gwern0

      > Like another commenter though, I can’t get to sleep that night and get a really crappy “hangover” the next day.

Yes, modafinil has a pretty long half-life (even longer for the armodafinil isomer). You could try taking it first thing on waking, and to speed up absorption, take it sublingually.

    • Lloyd

If it affects your sleep that is a pretty good indicator you can lower your dosage and take it earlier in the day. Waking up an hour or two earlier than normal might be a challenge at the time, but when the drugs kick in you’ll not notice it that day. I have a sleep disorder and it is hell waking myself up at a regular time, but if I don’t and I take me meds too late in the day I’ll get insomnia too (Frustrating when my dx is hypersomnia!)
