Video: The Bulletproof Executive speaks at the Stanford School of Medicine Quantified Self Meetup

June 27, 2012 · 10 comments

Last week I had the pleasure of giving two talks at the Silicon Valley Quantified Self Meet-Up (QS) at the Stanford School of Medicine.  I recorded my talks for those of you that couldn’t make it.

One of the primary tools in being  Bulletproof  is the ability to self-experiment and quantify changes so you can see what works for you.  Self-experimentation is key to fine-tuning your performance, optimizing your nutrition and sharpening your mind.  How you feel is important, and so is what you are able to measure.   When what you are doing is on the cutting edge of current research it helps to not only feel good, but measure positive changes.

Quantifying & Biohacking at the Quantified Self meet-up:

Additionally, the QS organizers Lisa Betts-LaCroix & Karen Herzog, asked  a woman to give a talk on her self-experiment and success using the Bulletproof diet, where 8 years of working with physicians had failed.  Unless your doctor is Bulletproof, your doctor generally cannot support you in all types of optimizations. I’ll post her excellent talk soon!

As a way of giving back to the people who are learning new things and focused on self-improvement, I’m sponsoring the Silicon Valley Quantified Self meetings for the year.  The Bulletproof Executive is honored to be the first annual sponsor of the SVQS meet up.

What experiments are you running this week?

Hey Dave, over at brute force biohackers were are working on several hacks. Nearing the end of 20 session n back training, as well as em wave training. Will take IQ test soon and report back the results. We are also starting a 100 meter dash hack, where we are going to see how much we can hack into sprint speed.

Good stuff… but I have a random question.

What’s up with the sunglasses? I’ve heard you mention elsewhere you wear them often. Isn’t blocking natural light from your eyes during the day a bad idea? I assume there must be a good reason I’m not aware of.

    Thanks!

I was assuming those are your blue light blocking glasses?

      • Dave Asprey

Florescent lights have always caused problems for me. Figuring this out was one of the major breakthroughs in my personal performance. These glasses are a custom tent that blocks bluelight and my eyes perform best under fluorescent lighting wearing either these or even better yet polarized amber tint glasses. If I’m under high-intensity fluorescent lighting with no glasses, I will get a silent migraine within an hour. No pain, but my brain just turns off. I’ve been known to drool. I’ve managed to extend my resilience to this awful form of lighting from about 5 min. I have work to do on hacking the way my brain processes light information but this is some of the more challenging and grueling work i’ve done. Would love to have more time…

Fascinating. I don’t know whether it’s related or not, but my nephew with some Asperger’s-like symptoms used to wear sunglasses a lot and was extremely sensitive to sunlight and bright lights. People used to nag him for wearing sunglasses a lot and assumed it was some sort of psychological defect or or something (even though he and his mother told them that the sun hurt his eyes–which they refused to believe). Then he went mostly Paleo, quickly became dramatically less light-sensitive, and I’ve never seen him wear sunglasses since, and no one other than me has acknowledged the change. My own light senstivity also improved dramatically on Paleo, so I believed him from the start.

Light sensitivity is influenced by gluten and mycotoxins. Any kind of nervous system information can make it worse. Check out what Irlen Lenses do for autism and add. It’s amazing stuff. Irlen.com

    Dave,
I’ve seen conflicting reports on whether or not to take CoQ10 if you have a Candida issue… do you have any input on this? Some people say it feeds it, some say it helps cure it. I’ve had an esophageal candida problem that won’t go away. Any advice appreciated!

Cory Hart called, he wants his sunglasses back.

    • Dave Asprey

No way! I had to buy these puppies an auction of celebrity paraphernalia. The elvis ones were too expensive. ;-0

    Dave
You mentioned in one of your pod casts using a biohack to reduce the problems with smoking meat. I do have a smoker and I use it regularly although latley I have reduce the temperature. What are these bihacks.
