VIDEO: Joe Rogan Experiences The Bulletproof Executive

October 22, 2012 · 53 comments

There has been so much love from The Joe Rogan Show and his fans from the show last Monday, I’m so grateful.  I have the feeling Joe and I could do 30 more shows there is so much to talk about, and hanging out with him is FUN. Joe Rogan is pretty damn ripped.

For those of you that don’t know Joe, he’s a stand-up comedian, and has appeared on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” and “The Jimmy Kimmel Show.”  Did I mention Rogan was ripped?  He won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championship and as lightweight champion went on to beat both the middle and heavyweight title-holders to obtain the Grand Championship.  He also hosted “Fear Factor” on NBC for six seasons.

For those of you that haven’t caught the show yet, check it out:

Video streaming by Ustream

He’s had other really cool guests on like Tim Ferriss, Victor Conte from Balco, the guy that is responsible for athletic doping and other really cool shows.  Check him out, or catch him live in a city near you.

Hi Dave, looking forward to hearing this show as both yourself & Joe have some good ideas. I was wondering, are you at some point going to release a transcript of this podcast? I find I take in the info better when I’m reading it.
    thanks,
    Michael

    • abright

      A transcript is coming!

  • J

I love Dave! Could he be more brilliant? I think not.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jahed.momand Jahed Momand

Turns out he also rips you a new one in his podcast with Victor Conte. Convenient lies of omission, or something to that effect (modafinil, HRT, etc).

    Bulletproof charlatan sounds about right.

    • cogrick2

That is not a fair characterization from what I can remember. Joe did express concern about Dave not bringing up his use of Modafinil, but he also said he was enjoying Bulletproof Coffee during that same podcast. I imagine we will hear a lot more of Joe’s Bulletproof-related thoughts in the coming podcasts. The big question for me is whether Joe will review the podcast as he said he would.

      • Dave Asprey

True. If he actually ripped me a new one, he wouldn’t have emailed me that evening. ?

        • SevenOSeven

A true master can “rip you a new one” and the person who gets ripped doesn’t realize respect was lost as they continue their friendship in a downgraded way.

        • Joshua Walker

Why should Dave confuse the issues by getting people interested in a drug which is prescription only in the US, and most folks don’t jet all over different continents and would therefore be ineligible for a legit script? Same with the T. His system met the criteria for an edocrinologist to prescribe it. Guarantee few people listening will have low enough T for that. He did mention the racetams, and even inserted a disclaimer that they are actually a drug, just freely available. Seems logical to me.

    • James

He brings it up at 1:18 and if you listen until the end, you hear Joe say “I’m gonna try it” after poking a bit of fun. He is a comedian after all, and at the end of the day it is a comedy podcast!

      • Dave Asprey

Funny, before the show he had my full notes on it. Controversy sells. Joe is a buddy and I’ll be back on the show. I actually had a bottle of it, and a bottle of bioidentical testosterone cream in my bag, ready to show if conversation went there…

        • http://www.facebook.com/jahed.momand Jahed Momand

If you think you’re not being irresponsible by omitting the effects that HRT would have on body composition while on a 4000+ calorie fat-heavy diet, and then posting up ab pictures as if they were the consequence of just the bulletproof diet and not the well-documented fat-burning and muscular hypertrophic effects of exogenous testosterone, well, I don’t know what to say man.

          Strong ethics.

        • AdamFiddler

I would argue that the difference between what Dave does and what a “charlatan” does is actually pretty large: Mainly, I mean that all of the ideas he does present have been shown to be incredibly effective on people other than himself. It’s not like he’s giving you the Dean Ornish diet while he’s popping ‘roids all day and then claiming he got swole because of broccoli…

Does what you said invalidate any kind of “scientific support” that his diet is anabolic? Absolutely. Does it mean that in a broader sense it undermines his overall credibility in making “biohacking” recommendations or mean that the advice he gives is “bad”? I would say absolutely not.

        • SevenOSeven

          Agreed!

        • http://www.facebook.com/jahed.momand Jahed Momand

I will say this much, the only good, and I mean REALLY GOOD thing I took away from your blog has been the bulletproof coffee. Great stuff. So I’m not a total hater. However, I read your blog mostly for the lols these days, bulletproof fasting and your irrational and poorly PubMed-justified fear of fungi, for instance. But thanks for the bulletproof coffee and Kerrygold butter intro.

          Hey man,
Try out the dual n-back training if you want something else that gives pretty crazy results. Thats a pretty easy recommendation to validate yourself

Hi Dave very good pod cast you will have to go back on Joe does a very good show .I would like to thank you the coffee butter mct oil is working great i don,t have brain haze any more something that plaged me my hole life keep up the good work.

    • Dave Asprey

      Killer!!! ?

  • AdamFiddler

Seems really unfortunate that some people will come to the opinion that just because you’re using Modafinil and testosterone, this invalidates all of the other great work you’ve done (and make available for free through the blog).

With that said, do you not feel it’s disingenuous to selectively promote certain products or procedures that you’re using over others?

For example, you’ve openly stated that you consider something like Modafinil essential to optimal performance, and yet it doesn’t even come up once in a 150 minute recorded conversation about your biohacking experiences? Same deal with the T cream; you talk openly about your years of obesity on the show, and yet even though you say you’re taking testosterone just to maintain normal T levels due to that period, there’s no mention of any of this either? Or thyroid hormone?

I think it’s perfectly understandable to be afraid that emphasizing any of these things might obscure your overall message, and having talked with you personally a bit I consider you an extremely ethical guy on many fronts. Sadly, though, even some of the academically and scientifically oriented friends I have find it very hard to take you seriously for (e.g.) the reasons I stated above. In other words, I support wholeheartedly the work you’re doing and the sentiment behind it, but I really wonder if you aren’t shooting yourself in the foot by coming across this way.

    • AdamFiddler

Edit: Whoops thought the podcast was longer than 2 hours. My bad.

  • Jimmy

I’m a long-time JRE fan your interview with him blew my mind! Since listening, I’ve already become an upgraded coffee devotee and have turned 3 friends onto it already – nothing but rave reviews. It really works. I INSTANTLY felt the benefits – improved alertness, crisp thinking, and sustained energy throughout the day. My wife and I have just started intermittent fasting with the coffee in the morning. Here’s to better living. Thanks Dave.

  • BUN Z

I listened to podcast and was really intrigued. A diet that gets me to skip breakfast and start the day with a coffee? Damn I do that now, and if a different coffee can jack my system to be better I’d love to try it.

But the deal breaker is taste – the “morning coffee” is the best and the taste of those 1st few sips is one of the best flavours I’ll taste all day. I am worried the bulletproof coffee with coconut oil and butter (still makes me go WTF even though I know it is about the good oils) is gonna taste funky? Is someone who loves MILK coffees going to like it? I read some people say it is “like a latte” which is a milky coffee..

I guess the thing to do is just get some and try it but will it be able to be shipped all the way to Australia?

  • Adam

Dave, I really enjoyed the podcast and I’m very intrigued. I bought some of your MCT oil and I’m looking forward to adding it to my Vitamix shakes. I’m a bit hesitant about the coffee, since I’ve never been a coffee drinker. I am, however, interested in intermittent fasting, and I’m wondering if you would recommend IF without the coffee? I’d love to hear your (or anyone’s) thoughts on this. Thanks a lot.

    • http://twitter.com/bradypatterson Brady Patterson

Predominantly I drink the regular bulletproof coffee but if you’re not a coffee drinker you can use it with matcha green tea if looking to include the caffeine or if you want to avoid the caffeine, I find peppermint tea is a great substitute. Basically, in either of these cases you’re getting a comparative green tea latte or peppermint tea latte. Both are delicious.

Regarding your question about the IF, the geen tea will be the closest to the coffee so will sub out well in the morning.

  • Luke

Hi Dave, a little off topic but was wondering if you plan to do any future blog posts on bulletproof ergonomics? I am really interested if you have opinions on the likes of bulletproof office setups and sleeping positions etc I have been applying many of the other bulletproof hacks in college and its been amazing how much output quality has increased. Thanks. Luke

  • Brian

    Dave,
Thanks for all of the hard work. I found you via JRE and have already been enjoying my new BP coffee, earthing mat, and am learning to use my emwave. I also got the aging formula and glutathione…I went shopping! haha
Anyway, my question is- On the JRE you mentioned a supplement that helps absorb and/or counter the effects of extra choline in the system (I am the type that gets jaw tension and headaches). What supplement was that? Thanks again

      AHH…nm. found it -ANIRACETAM-

      • TheJeebus

Even 3 of those does absolutely nothing to me. Don’t bother.

        • Dave Asprey

Did you see the rolling stone article about smart drugs? They interviewed me about Aniracetam and used it with Alpha Brain. It is known for increases in memory IO and decreases in stress…

Could you please explain your a.m. salt routine? Is this before or after coffee? Thanks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dsweeney Sweeney Daniel

I believe he’s described it elsewhere on the blog.

From what I gathered.. 1 teaspoon of high quality salt (he likes Himalayan Pink Salt) first thing when you wake up.

  • Geoff Robinson

    Hi Dave
Joe asks at the end if there is anything else that can have similar effects to 7 days of neurofeedback, what did you answer?
Can you say anymore about spec forces using this technology? And how close are we to a $300 version?

Lastly the powerplate/turbosonic discussion and bone health got me thinking about a qigon/taichi shaking practice, I learnt this from a David Carradine book 15 years ago, thinking about similarities, assume tech version got be more efficient. I have a genetic bone disorder in my femur ‘fibrous dysplasia’ which I ve chosen not to treat with osteoblast/osteoclast meds (bisphosphenates) and will investigate the powerplate as result of your discussion.

Crazy, I listened to Joes podcast with Victor Conte and you back to back. I learned more in 4 days about the human body than I have in the past 20 years. I’m a big fan of Rogans and I hope to hear more guests like you. Enjoyed the podcast!

  • Bpoll

The show was Epic! the whole reson im here and cant wait to get started withthis stuff. Joe wasn’t joking ive listen to it three or four time through taking notes, Godd stuff keep it up.

Just found out about you and your program through the experience podcast, and boy was I in high heaven! Finally a well spoken speech on real health! So much of what you said paralleled with what I’ve studied over the last 8 years, I was worried with my husband so excited to start your diet that it would be harder for me to keep my Edgar Cayce epilepsy diet, then I found out how similar they are! And now I have another source for recipes. Thank you so much for your work, now I can show your info (so well wrapped up) to my family and prove I’m not a crazy hippie, or maybe I am..

    • Dave Asprey

Really? I had no idea this was similar to Edgar Cayce’s diet. How interesting! Glad it’s helped you. ;)

Interesting podcast for sure, I was curious about the nutritional yeast causing cancer(I love my nooch!), so I hit pubmed like you suggested, and couldn’t find anything supporting that claim. I could only find 2 entries for “nutritional yeast” and neither of them mentioned cancer. :/

    • mreen

Same here — I’m a vegetarian and use nutritional yeast for all of its health benefits (protein, B12). I couldn’t find any research (including PubMed) tying it to any health concerns, much less cancer.

      • Dave Asprey

The original ones are from Fungalbionics series by Costantini, a WHO researcher who spent 18 years looking at fungus.

Thanks for responding — I will look into that.

  • SevenOSeven

I really liked Dave’s appearance… I was blown away… then afterwards I was concerned that I bought into your ideology mostly because you were so likeable and so confident in your conversation. You’re a great salesman. But then I heard you were taking meds that were on the same level as speed wow… then read about manipulating your thyroid levels? I was sincerely wondering (not in a sarcastic way) how you felt about hijacking your thyroid to lose weight? In essence giving yourself Hyperthyroidism which results in crack-like systems and being detrimental to your health. This message isn’t to troll but I just feel like you should revisit the Rogan show and tell the potentially negative side of your research and things that may be construed as cheating to gain the endless research you’ve done by using substances a la Jessie Spano on Saved by the Bell.

    • Joshua Walker

Modafinil and racetams are not in any way related to speed. Not chemically, not in the mechanism of receptor actions, and not in the medical community. Speed is methamphetamine or occasionally plain amphetamine, if you’re buying it on the street. Meth is dirtier; amphetamines are in adderall — more correctly, adderall (and Dexedrine) *are* amphetamines, in capsule form. The generic version of adderall reads “mixed amphetamine salts” on the pill bottle.

Amp releases dopamine and norepinephrine, and has moderate effect on serotonin levels in certain brain areas. It of course requires a script, and Dave does not take it and has no interest in it. (I personally love adderall.)

Racetams act primarily with involvement in increased utilization of choline, with most effects being mediated via acetylcholine pathways. No prescription is required. They’ve been around forever (50s or 60s) with no reports of dangerous action. Only thing that happened with racetams, legally, since then is when the FDA, seeking ever more control, banned the inclusion of any substance that is not a constituent of a plant or food, in dietary supplements. This would include racetams, which is why they are freely online but not in GNC.

Modafinil is a more complicated story (and I personally prefer the enamtiomerically-pure armodafinil) but I’ll leave it at this: most places it is available OTC (by places I mean the UK etc not like Thailand or something). They aren’t sure how it works, but it is classified by the medical community as a “wakefulness promoting agent” in differentiation from “stimulant” which is the classification of amphetamine, racist it is confirmed that however it works, it doesn’t play with DA,
      NE, or 5-HT.

In the US you need a script, which Dave has, for he falls perfectly inside the guidelines of the DSM for its use. Frequent air travel and his busy lifestyle, like most of us that aren’t farmers, annihilates any trace of a circadian rhythm, and modafinil is indicated in “shift work sleep disorder” and “excessive daytime sleepiness” and jet lag, all just different phrases for a lack of a consistent circadian cycle.

That was great! I’m looking forward to experimenting with some of your ideas and techniques.

Guys, what is the flow “tank” you are talking about?

    • Matt

      It is an isolation tank.

Very interesting podcast. I googled Modafinil and found a Health Canada warning. Link below.

This is exceptionally rare and related to liver enzymes (like Tylenol.)
