Video: Hacking Your Hormones with John Gray of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”

July 16, 2012 · 10 comments

Last month I was in the Bay Area for a number of events, including the Silicon Valley Health Institute‘s monthly seminar. The speaker, John Gray, author of “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” spoke about hacking your hormones, especially when in relationships. He covers how you can hack your relationships to keep them going strong by incorporating an understanding of hormones and behavior, touching on nutrition and supplements.

In a humorous and informative way, Gray answers the following questions:

  • How do hormones have an impact on my relationship?
  • What is oxytocin and how can it help reduce stress for women?
  • How does testosterone help men reduce their stress levels?
  • What is man-o-pause?
  • Why do women score lower than men on tests that measure happiness?
  • What is cortisol and how can it be a benefit/detriment to my relationship?
  • Helping men and women hack stress . . . the tools are not the same.
  • What are super foods and how can they help in replenishing hormones
  • How is balancing blood sugar connected to balancing hormones?

If you liked this talk, you can find more about John Gray at his website.

The Silicon Valley Health Institute (formerly Smart Life Forum) is an almost 20-year-old anti-aging nonprofit education group in Silicon Valley, and I’ve been on the Board of Directors for at least 6 years, and President for the last couple years. If you like The Bulletproof Executive and you live in the Bay Area, consider dropping in to a meeting.

What do you do to hack your hormones? What about your relationships?

This is a fantastic talk, if only we could get every man and woman to see it and actively work on putting his ideas into play.

I’m honored that he came to SVHI.com to speak! A real gentleman.

Fascinating talk. Thanks for sharing. What are your thoughts on Lithium Orotate and Tongkat Ali? I’d be interested if you think someone already Bulletproof would find them of benefit.

Anyway you can put that on podcast? BTW, why the drop off in podcasts?

Production issues – we are resuming podcasts this week, have a backlog ready to go!

Married 9 yrs. Much of what he says rings true. I had never considered the reason why testosterone aromatizes into estrogen before. Does anyone know if his reasoning is correct?

    • Dave Asprey

John’s reasoning is correct, but there are environmental reasons too, as well as physiological stress and inflammation.

    Dave-

I would love to get your opinion on an issue that’s causing me a great deal of stress and concern. I am a 21 year old male with incredibly low testosterone and LH. I have had the signs and symptoms for several years but only had the blood work to prove it in the last year. Most recently I tested at a total of 64, a free level of 1.4, and an LH of 0.6. An MRI of my pituitary gland revealed nothing out of the ordinary that would explain the secondary hypo-gonadism. Is natural supplementation like tongkat and myomin something that may help, or do you- as one endocrinologist I’ve seen- think I might be forced to look at HRT? Do you have opinions on HRT vs BHRT or on replacement therapy in general? Are there other avenues, that you’re aware of, that I could/should explore? I greatly respect your opinion and have combed through the site and started making my way through the podcasts to learn as much as I can to improve my life.

It’s an embarrassing and scary issue and has left me grasping for a solution. Since the public places on the site are the only locations you want us to post personal health questions I do not feel comfortable displaying too much personal information but I’m guessing this issue might require a lengthy answer or further information for you to adequately respond. Please let me know if you need more information (blood work, history, etc) and how to best get that to you. Any opinion or suggestion you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for the wealth of information you’ve already provided and I am grateful for any insight into this less-than-bulletproof issue.
