VIDEO: Augmented Authoring – Biohacking Technologies to Improve People Who Write

February 19, 2013 · 15 comments

The Humanity+ conference in December proved to be fun and educational, with many accomplished writers, philosophers and scientists at the event. The conference explored how to write the future and what risks and opportunities to consider when upgrading humanity through technology.  My topic: “The Augmented Author: Technologies to Upgrade People Who Write.”

It’s  a short video, about 25 minutes, and it has a ton of useful information whether you’re a blog writer, a student, a book author trying to increase productivity, breaking through writer’s block or whether you’re interested in performing better in general. Several biohacker toys are showcased. The effects on my health and brain function have been profound!  There is even some controversial Q & A regarding modafinil. :)

Topics covered:

  • 1:05 Biohacking the Unconscious Parts of Your Brain
  • 2:50 EmWave 2 – Monitor Your Heart Rate & “The Zone” Neurological, Biochemical, Mechanical, & electromagnetic
  • 5:00 Radioactive Sugar Measurement
  • 5:59 Dual N-Back Training – Double Your Working Memory; Pay Attention to Your States of Consciousness
  • 7:55 Electrostimulation  (tDCS & CES)
  • 9:45 Direct Stimulation (Lasers!)
  • 11:35 EEG Neurofeedback
  • 13:25 HEG Biofeedback, (aka Upgraded Focus) Blood flow training, feels where your brain works
  • 14:24 Light! Orange-Tinted Glasses & Blue LED lights
  • 15:00 Sound Entrainment
  • 15:30 Modafinil
  • 15:55 Bulletproof Hardware (Bulletproof Coffee & Diet)
  • 17:00 Q & A

What are some of the tools and tips you use to upgrade your writing?  Share in the comments below!

This is news to me about coffee filters. French press is the way to go then? What about one of those Italian style Moka pots? BTW, great presentation Dave, as always, thanks for all your work.

Hey Dave! Where can we find the open source software/hardware for the EEG neurofeedback training? Also support at upgradedself.com is being unresponsive.

Wow! So many amazing things I wish I had the money for.

Dave, I was wondering if you know the answer to an issue I’m having. When I go very low carb by eating meat/fish/veggies/fat I have problems sleeping. Sometimes it’s a problem of getting to sleep, but often it’s a problem of waking up constantly throughout the night. And the sleep I do get is not very great. I’ve tried waiting it out thinking it might be my body taking it’s time to becoming a fat burner. But, after a wk and a half it’s still the same and I’m dying for some good sleep so I usually cave and eat some carbs.

Is there something I could do/take that would fix this? Do you know the reason behind this issue?

I asked Dr. Kruse and he said it was a symptom of bad mitochondria function and I should take d-ribose. Do you think this is a good suggestion?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

I heard Dave talk about this. Try a teaspoon of raw honey right before bed.

“my body taking it’s time to becoming a fat burner. But, after a wk and a half it’s still the same”

Takes months, in my experience. Try adding organic white rice to your high-fat diet, to fulfill your requirement for easy glucose. Also removing energy-depleting activities is ESSENTIAL if you’re still not eating enough carbs.

..oh yeah, Dr. Kruse tends to give highly abstract answers to some GOOD questions… But sometimes very helpful.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing this video Dave.

Really enjoy following your blog man.

Dave do you have a hack (supplement, technology, etc) that improves spatial abilities? I easily get lost driving and don’t know how to navigate to locations. Without my phone’s directions, I’d be lost constantly. Any suggestions?

What do you think of this against coconut oil?

A little too much bragging there Dave. Yeah, we get it, you’re awesome.

    • Eebe

Nah, I loved it. Awesome video!

    Re: Modafinil:
The biohacking/QS movement is partially about taking personal responsibility for your actions, and accepting the effects/consequences. Don’t project your fear onto Dave (or better yet, conquer your fears). He is (at least, was) kicking massive ass on the drug while actively looking for more sustainable ways to achieve similar results. More power to him.
