Cool Fact

Dave Asprey: Today’s cool fact of the day is about blushing. You can thank your sympathetic nervous system for that rosy red hue that hits your cheeks when you trip in public or say something silly on your first date. Whenever you’re embarrassed, adrenaline in your body automatically speeds up your breathing and your heart rate and sends more blood than normal to your face which is why you get that blush. But there’s an upside to it. Recent studies that we’ve come across show that blushing actually helps strengthen your social bonds and increases empathy from others meaning that people may actually judge your embarrassed response less harshly if they see you blush. So blushing is basically good for you.

Overview

Dave Asprey: You are listening to episode thirteen of Upgraded Self Radio. Today we have an awesome interview with Dr. Mary T. Newport. If you haven’t heard of her yet, you will know her name soon. She cured her husband’s Alzheimer’s using coconut oil and ketones, which are basically the fat molecules that your body makes in response to coconut oil and your body can burn ketones for fuel. After she struggled to find a way to help her ailing husband, Dr. Newport stumbled upon evidence that ketones and ketogenic diets, like portions of the bulletproof diet, could be an effective treatment for degenerative diseases even beyond Alzheimer’s. She began testing her hypothesis on her husband and got amazing results almost right away. After some more research, she realized that ketones have a host of other health improving effects, and if you want to improve your health or become more resilient to disease or just increase your cognitive abilities, you’ll definitely want to hear what she has to say on our show today.

Dr. Newport did her training at the University of Cincinnati and spends her days practicing with extremely young infants, which is kind of interesting because as you will hear in the show that was her first time she had heard MCT oil was first used on babies.

We also have an awesome listener Q&A where we discussion dietary recommendations for autoimmune disease, healing extreme injuries, how you can improve you digestion, what I actually eat, the problems with steel cut oat and other kinds of oats, mycotoxins in grains, ways to prevent and reverse prostate cancer, and using brain hacking techniques like TDCS to reduce cortisol. We’ll talk about MCT oil and some more about the actual statistics behind flu vaccines.

As always, we are going to close with our biohacker report where you are going to hear a brief summary of three new pieces of research that caught our attention this week. You’ll hear about how to stay awake, how to stay lean and productive using protein, how to improve your brain function using meditation, and how to insure optimal health using the right vitamins and supplements.

Hey Armi I have a question about the MCT oil healing your scar. This concerns a lateral scar on the top lip of a 3 year old child with cleft palate resulting from surgery. What was the severity, color, depth, and age of the scar?

Hey Dave, how do you keep your stomach from acting up after taking in all that L-Glutamine and other amino acids along with butter and coconut oil, etc.? I have tried this many times but end up having diarrhea from all the oils and amino acids. Appreciate all your great work!

There is a hole in the transcript between where Armi says “They are probably doing a lot of damage to your body.” and “I think Mark Sisson has said something”. It is the part where you say why fiber is not good for you? On the podcast it’s about 1:09
