Announcements

Shout out to Joe Rogan, Brian Redban, Deathsquad and Taitimus Maximus.  Thanks Tait for putting me on Joe’s radar.  The show was a blast, we covered a ton of stuff.  We had an awesome volunteer, Zack, transcribe the show, which is now in the biohacker toolbox.

Humanity+ I’ll be speaking at this conference in San Francisco December 1st & 2nd.  The ‘Humanity+ Conference’ an unprecedented opportunity to engage with today’s leading experts on emerging technologies and trends that will change the way we live.  The conference will explore the important ethical and philosophical dimensions of upgrading humanity through technology – whilst sharing the very latest scientific and technological breakthroughs.  For details, visit http://2012.humanityplus.org/. My topic will be “The Augmented Author: Technologies to Upgrade People Who Write”

The Bulletproof Conference: Biohack Your Life:  Those of you who saw the announcement and signed up for the early notification list have already received your early-bird emails, if you haven’t, check your spam box.  General registration is open.  We’ve had a few inquiries from people for whom the conference is out of budget, and we will open up the 3rd day of speakers, that will also include some demos, and while awesome, is just not the same as the first 2 days with Jay and I.   I expect an over-subscribed conference based on interest so far. This is the only conference like it anywhere where you get access to hands-on biohacking led by world-class people. To hell with learning about biohacking. This is about actually *doing* it.

PaleoFX  I’m pleased to have been invited to speak at the second annual PaleoFX Symposium in Austin, TX, March 28-30, 2013. I’m looking forward to meeting awesome speakers like Sarah Fragoso, Nora Gedgaudas, Kelly Starrett, Paul Jaminet and many, many more. Tickets are on sale now, and early buyers who reserve their ticket by Dec 1 will be automatically entered in a contest to win access to a VIP dinner with speakers, or to have the full cost of their PaleoFX ticket refunded.  For details, visit www.therealpaleofx.com.

The coffee research study is still taking applicants, a link  provided on the podcast page.  There are still about 30 spaces to get a free 12 oz bag of coffee if you complete the study (this link says by 11/29, but it will be the first 50 that complete the study to spec).  A lot of people have signed up for and started the study, but not enough followed the instructions to get usable data.  So make sure you do the two daily sessions at roughly the same time every day, and try not to miss any days. If you must skip days, make sure you don’t miss more than two sessions overall.

Listener Q & A Summary

  1. What is the best way to measure one’s health? What states are most important form it?
  2. How do you manage your information diet (magazines, academic journals, blogs and newspapers, do you read, certain habit or go by feel)?
  3. What do you mean when you say “training your intuition”?
  4. How do you retain so much information? What are your recommendations for other people to increase the amount of information they can retain? (both supplemental and through practice?)
  5. What about spaced repetition flash card programs like Anki and Supermemo?
  6. Is there a difference between rote memorization and being able to fluidly use what you memorize? What techniques work better for each type of memory?
  7. Any hacks for improving your hearing? Is there a difference between directional improvements or simply hearing more no matter the volume?

Great Podcast once again!!! If one were to check levels of Vitamin D, Dr. Rocky suggested to check calcium with that. Does the Co-op list continue? Check D3 and Calcium and if one is higher or lower then check X, Y, Z and so on.

I can’t seem to find the link to the study. I would like to take the test even if you have filled spots. I’m curious how BP coffee effects my mental capabilities.

      Did you get this link?.

Dr. Patel, you’re my hero! Just for being a doctor that is actually getting in there and doing something about both his own health and promoting physical culture. No more fat doctors, who’s with me!

    Great job, guys.

Where would one find this spiky mat of doom you speak of?

    • Michael

I just did a search for “spike mat” on Amazon and came up with a multitude of options.

Would you be worried about mold on dry roasted macadamia nuts?

    • Dave Asprey

Mold toxins are heat resistant even if mold is dead. Cooked omega 3 oxidizes easily…

Hey, loving the new podcast and layout, but i Have a few questions.
    1. could you turn the loudness on the music down to the level of talking? I had my earphones in and it wasn’t a pleasant experience.
    2. can you put time marks for the questions and the talking points of the interviewee? it’d be really helpful.

Thank, glad to see the podcast going again!

    • Dave Asprey

Ok will ask our audio guy. Thanks!!!

Whoah – you really threw Armi under the bus Dave! Maybe you weren’t referring to Armi wrt “staff changes”, etc – but that’s what it sounded like to me having listened to all your previous episodes.

Anyway, I was glad to see a new podcast because I do a lot of driving and listening. This wasn’t exactly one of your more interesting interviews, but I’m glad to see it going again nonetheless.

    • http://twitter.com/clutchmuffin Bryce

Interesting, this is one of my favorite interviews hah funny to see that people seek other sorts of information and different variation of interests emerge.

  • Stephen

Great improvement on the podcast! .. maybe one day you can do a behind the scenes episode or post on your new audio & software podcast gear! I am down 4 pounds and have just started to embrace the lifestyle .. thank you for sharing this great information Dave!

I ordered 5lb of coffee on November 7th and still haven’t received it yet. I emailed them two times via contact form and still haven’t got a response??? anyone else having this problem ?

    • ryanhand

Yes, getting my orders has really been a problem too. Customer service is really bad right now too. I would imagine he’ll eventually get it straightened out, but for now it sucks.

      • Dave Asprey

        Here’s the deal….

Thank you so much for deciding to order the Upgraded products I’ve worked so hard to create. It is with some pain that I feel obligated to apologize to you for taking so long to answer your questions about your order. It’s totally not Bulletproof behavior and there are no excuses for it, but here’s an explanation of what happened, and what I’m going to do to fix it so it won’t happen to you again. Thank you for sticking with me.
        What happened
My appearance on the Joe Rogan show(link to transcript) was an amazing success, and Joe’s followers ordered more stuff than I expected in my wildest dreams. I had stocked up before the show to make sure my loyal customers continued to get the quality products that are used to getting from The Bulletproof Executive. I simply failed to predict how many new orders would come in.
The day of the show, I placed large orders immediately when I saw the traffic levels, but it simply takes time to manufacture products as high-end as the Upgraded line. I did everything I know how to do in order to expedite, but the sheer volume overwhelmed my support team, and me personally. To add fuel to the fire, we discovered a bug with our warehouse operation that prevented us from knowing which customers had back orders pending so that we could notify them personally, and it prevented us from shipping “split orders” where we get you what’s in stock immediately and ship the rest when we can. There is no excuse for this either, and it stressed me out beyond belief (even with emWave). I have since fixed the problem with the warehouse operation…but it still impacted you.
What I’m doing to fix it
I’ve since hired a new customer support person to take better care of customers like you so we can reply to your inquiries directly. I fired the call center – all customer support is in-house now, which costs me more but provides better service for you. Yet another customer support person is coming on board shortly after that. I started ordering larger volumes of stock, and I’ve asked all my manufacturing partners for contracts specifying exactly how quickly they can make new Upgraded products.
You deserve better than what happened during this time, and I’ll do everything in my entrepreneurial arsenal to make sure that you get treated with the respect you deserve. The wait you experienced, and the lack of explanation for it, is so far below my expectations that’s inexcusable. I’ve been racking my brain trying to fix it quickly.
        What you can do
I will gladly ship your order to you the second it is in the warehouse, and if we need to split your order, I will pay shipping out of my own pocket for the second part of your order. Or, if you lost faith in me, I understand. Please accept my apologies anyway and simply ask for a refund, and you will get it with my compliments. If you feel like this email doesn’t answer your questions, you can email me personally [email protected] and I will reply to you as soon as humanly possible.
        Respectfully,
        Dave

        • ryanhand

Thanks for the response Dave – it’s totally understandable (I run an online store also). And thanks for getting my order split and sent out yesterday. Sorry I had to take to the message boards and raise a stink. Sounds like you’re all over it now, so I’m looking forward to getting my goods on a regular basis. Best,
          Ryan

The technical quality of the podasts are definitely improving. Levels are good, no bloopers, and very well produced. Information quality has always been top notch. I really enjoy listening to them and I look forward to the next one.

Good to see the podcast back up and running! Also, awesome job of taking care of the customer complaints that popped up here instead of support forums and such. It’s awesome that the product had such a reception to the Joe Rogan listeners. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next episode!

Can we get a copy of your mendelay database?

  • Sam

Question for the next podcast: Have you done any investigation on how to bio-hack breasts? After breastfeeding 2 kids, they have deteriorated. This would really help my wife’s self confidence (and benefit me also). Thanks.

  • Jack117

    Mr. Asprey,

Thank you for answering some of the questions I asked. Here are some others that I thought of:

    1. If I were to follow the bulletproof diet while eating normal grain fed butter that you can buy in a grocery store, how would the effects of the diet be different than following the diet while eating grass-butter (trans fats, vitamins, etc…)?

    2. How is i3 Mindware different from lumosity? How is it better/worse?

    3. Are there any companies in Canada that you would recommend for getting your hormones and vitamin levels tested?

    4. When are we going to be able to buy your products in Canada (shipping fees suck)?

    5. Do the 5 pound bags of coffee need to be sealed as in absolutely no air can flow in and out or just tightly closed? What will happen if it’s not completley sealed? If they do need to be completely sealed, you should add a ziplock function to the bag.

    6. Is it just the selenium from brazil nuts that contributes to an increase in testosterone or is there something else from the nuts? What brands of selenium supplements would you recommend?

    7. Is stretching under tension better than normal stretching?

    8. What part does meditation play in Wim Hoff’s ability to handle cold?

    9. Should you give your ears breaks when listening to podcasts for long periods of time (if it’s not at a high volume)? When should you take breaks when doing so?

    10. If the purchasing power of people living in third world countries continues to increase, are there insects that you recommend we eat for protein since meat will become a luxury item (half-serious question)?

    11. What vegetables and fruits do you eat daily?

    12. What do you think of ultradian rhythms? Is there anything better than walking that you would recommend for taking an ultradian break.

    13. Do you think that people shouldn’t work more than 40, 50, 60, 80, etc… hours a week to avoid burnout?

    The podcast was 80/100.

      “an ultradian break?”

  • Sabu2012

Dr Patel might have to come back to explain the dental care comments. We know from Taubes and others that documented groups (see Dr. Weston A Price’s work) with NO dentists, who never brushed or flossed, enjoyed perfect or near perfect dental health and had little to no heart disease. When the dental hygiene hypothesis doesn’t fit the evidence, it might have to go the same way as the lipid hypothesis and heart disease. Or?

    Great show!

I just wanted to let you know that a link isn’t working in the show notes, it’s the myfitnesspal link.

  • http://twitter.com/billschuller billschuller

Yikes! The Tumeric linked in these show notes has maltodextrin, usually derived from corn or wheat. Was New Chapter preferred for a particular reason? How does it stand up to the Jarrow offering here (also Prime and Subscribe’n'save eligible): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013OVSUS/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=dataobsessive-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0013OVSUS

  • Michael A

This was possibly my favorite podcast! It was great to hear from a doctor on the diet. The references levels for blood lipids were exactly what I needed, now I’ve got something to shoot for! Thank you again for the podcasts, Dave! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/matjr Mark Thomas

Dr. Patel mentioned a study that spanned 52 countries and determined the order of significance in markers for heart disease. It would be great to know what this study was and an interesting read :)
