Exclusive Interview: Mira & Jayson Calton

The Caltons are among the world’s leading experts on the topics of weight management, lifestyle medicine, and micronutrient deficiency. Their high success rate working with adults and children to achieve sustainable weight loss and reverse health and disease conditions has made their consultancy highly sought after by celebrities, athletes, and top corporate executives around the world.  Jayson Calton authored a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition we mentioned in a recent podcast which showed how most diet plans don’t provide everything your body needs.  Jayson and Mira Calton come on Bulletproof Executive Radio to talk about how micronutrients can improve your health, longevity, and performance.

After tweaking my diet i am almost 100% bulletproof and have noticed a massive difference in energy levels and are leaner and lighter than i have been for 13 years.  My partner is struggling to break old eating habits and wanted to know weather this is an all or nothing diet.  Will following it 70 percent with the huge increase in good fats especially the butter still be a good thing? Will the diet be sensible for our two year old son?

Kent

What brand chlorella do you use/recommend for mercury absorption?? How much of it do you (should one) take?

Sean

I am currently a few days into the bulletproof intermittent fasting and am planning on trying it for a while and the writing a blog post about my experience/ results. I am starting with some counter culture coffee that meets your guidelines, but I plan to order your coffee soon so I can compare the two as part of my post.

Anyhow, I have a few things I would like you to clarify to make sure I am doing everything properly.

I normally supplement my primal diet with creatine, fish oil and vitamin D. Should I continue to use these during my fast? If so should I only consume them during my 6 hour eating window or is it ok to stick with my normal routine?

I don’t drink alcohol often, but if I chose to partake on a fast day would it need to be done in my 6 hour window even if it were liquor and soda water?

How important is limiting carb consumption in my eating window to optimize my body composition results?

How often do you recommend doing the fast days? Is it more beneficial to do it every day or to mix it up?

Thanks so much for your time and your amazing blog content, it has been a real inspiration to me!

How do CES machines compare to binaural beats for effectiveness?

I currently take the following supplements in the morning and use Bulletproof fasting most of the week. Are there any of these I should not take in the morning that might intterupt the fast that I should move into my eating window? Thanks.

Matcha green tea mixed with Coconut oil + MCT oil + Grass Fed Ghee
Aniracetam and 4 Extension IQ pills
    Fish oil or krill Oil
    Vitamin D
    Vitamin K2
    Calcium D- Glucarate
    Acetyl L-Carnitine
    Phosphodytal serine

    • Dave Asprey

You’re fine with all of those.

  • zman1593

Dave, you say you take around 20-30 of thes chlorella pills? About how many grams is this total or what is the dose of each tablet?

    • Dave Asprey

      200mg each

    • Sean

Note: Much of the chlorella on the market, “yaeyama”, is made around Okinawa… Can you taste the radiation? I don’t want to… There are other sources… A quality one made in Canada, I believe.

  • ReneeAnn

What do you think about hormone replacement therapy? I went through menopause at age 45 and have been on HRT for five years now. I use Activilla and feel great on it, so I’m afraid to try to go off of it. Before I went on it, I had hot flashes, but what really bothered me was that my sleep was terrible. I eat a very strict auto-immune version of Paleo and am Bulletproofing it pretty well, too. I may have Hashimoto’s, but have not been diagnosed with that officially, yet. Thank you! I love your podcast and blog!

    • ReneeAnn

I should have also said that my diet had become more and more clean over the last couple of years and I went from a size 14 to a size four over those two years. All of my Hashi’s symptoms disappeared a few months ago when I stopped eating seafood and chlorella, avoiding iodine. I consider that just temporary until I figure out how to reintroduce iodine without getting symptoms. Any help on that would also be appreciated. Part of the reason that I would like to stay on HRT is that I’m easily knocked from health back to sickness, so I’m reluctant to change something that seems to be working well for me. Also, docs around here are very conventional and rarely much help unless I figure something out myself and ask them to test it.

      • Dave Asprey

        Renee,
Hashis is linked to mercury by some physicians I respect!

        • ReneeAnn

Interesting! I just heard the podcast below yesterday, and would love to hear you interview Dr. Jackson. He said that if your methylation pathways are working properly, your body will dispose of heavy metals on it’s own. My mother and her grandmother had Alzheimer’s so, Alzheimer’s always in my mind. He said that problems with the methylation pathways are linked with Alzheimer’s and most neuro-immune conditions. I believe I have a problem in this area because I have to rotate sulfur containing foods, indicating that my sulfur methylation pathway is impaired. I heard about sulfur methylation from Chris Kresser on a podcast a few weeks ago. Dr. Jackson said to use a cream containing B12, B6 and Folic Acid (which I believe should be Folate), to restore the methylation pathways.

        • Dave Asprey

Methylation is a major issue for detox, and autistic kids don’t do it well. My book talks about methylation and which nutrients work (Wiley, Dec 2012); that is a good list you’ve got. Try the liposomal glutathione if you have methylation problems. It’s magic. ?

        • ReneeAnn

I have been looking for a liposomal glutathione that is soy-free. I even react when I eat animals (pigs) that have had soy even though they are pastured animals.

Well, I don’t need your book because because of babies (since I’m post-menopausal), but I’ll buy it just to read the part about methylation. :) I believe that it is not out yet. But, I’ll be on the look out.

        • Dave Asprey

That’s a tough one! Haven’t seen one either.

        • ReneeAnn

Now, I’ve listened to a second podcast interviewing Dr. Jackson. It’s a *must listen*.

          http://nsccharlotte.com/

The one from Super Human Radio. I hope you will listen, investigate and explain this to us! :)

  • Adam Fiddler

So eat sweet potatoes as minimally cooked as possible and leave the skins on, yeah?

    -Adam

    • Dave Asprey

Take the skins off. Most mold problems and pesticide probs are there.

    • http://armilegge.com Armistead Legge

No, sweet potatoes should be cooked well. Heat destroys the lectins.

  • Pat

    Hello.

I was wondering if I understood that about the comments about the Flax. I have done a lot of reading of Seth Roberts’ site and he says that the conversion might be better after you are used to it, and the science hasn’t caught up yet. I have been using it for years and I guess (very unscientifically) it works for me. Thanks.

    • Dave Asprey

It’s a reasonable argument that your body will get better at burning bad fuel if that’s what you give it. But why would you?

      • Pat

Don’t know Dave. Perhaps the body develops enzymes to match what it is being fed which raises the conversion rate?

I do legitimately notice decreased inflammation and mood increase. It even makes me a little more talkative. But again, sorry I can’t provide better science.

Your site has proved very valuable to me.

        • Dave Asprey

Patrick, thanks for your kind words. Wondering if the pufa is masking a cellular energy deficiency as Fowkes describes. See the Carl Lewis post for more info…

  • Momvschaos

I’m paleo and so are my kids, but previously we were vegan. They have serious issues with the texture of meat in general, and often refuse to eat it. I’m wondering…can I make some version of bulletproof coffee for my toddlers in the morning? Obviously not with coffee, but maybe decaf herbal tea or unsweetened cocoa powder and water? Would MCT oil and that much butter be ok for 2, 3 and 4 year olds? Any other advice? Thanks!

    • ReneeAnn

When I want “decaf” bulletproof “coffee,” I brew roasted chicory root that I buy on Amazon. I’d love to hear what Dave thinks about that. I’m sure it doesn’t have all of the anti-oxidents that coffee has, but it is a nice flavor that tastes good with the oils blended in. I would think some naturally herbal decaf teas would work, too. Perhaps there is a very healthy one to use? Maybe decaf Green Tea? I have to limit my caffeine to get a good night’s sleep, so I can’t drink coffee every day, though I would love to.

    • Dave Asprey

Kids metabolize caffeine twice as fast as adults. I give my kids (2.5 and 4.5 years old) a small (2oz) cup of Bulletproof coffee. No behavior problems at all; they love it and it’s good for them. You can make cocoa the same way but chocolate is more likely to cause behavior problems than Upgraded Coffee because chocolate quality control is harder to do. Clean chocolate is safe. I’ve also made vanilla “white chocolate” drinks for them, with vanilla beans, butter, MCT, and xylitol. They drink it…

  • Daniel Hook

I was impressed with the way you did this interview. It felt like the Caltons were making my BS detector fire every minute or so with unqualified categorical statements and outright bad facts like the comment implying albinism was caused by micro-nutrient deficiency.

My gut reaction would have been to try my best to tear them down, but you managed to extract some useful information from them and talk them down from some things like “all pharmaceuticals are bad.” My reaction is probably more suited to trolling the internet and academic debate where as I can see your approach would be much more effective in the business environment. Honestly, that was the most important thing I got out of the interview.

    • Dave Asprey

Thanks Daniel. Everyone has something to teach me! ;)
