Recipe: How to Make Your Coffee Bulletproof…And Your Morning Too

November 10, 2010 · 971 comments

When people hear more than half my calories come from healthy fats, one of the most common questions after “Why?” is “How?”

I start the day with a cup of Bulletproof coffee. I learned about the power of butter at 18,000 feet elevation near Mt. Kailash in Tibet when I staggered into a guest house from the -10 degree weather and was literally rejuvenated by a creamy cup of yak butter tea. The biohacker in me asked, “why?” and that was the genesis of my recipe below, which is widely heralded as a cognitive enhancing recipe.

Dave Asprey near Mt. Kailash

It was John Patrick Henry’s 2nd cousin’s boyfriend Juan Valdez who said, “Give me high-end coffee or give me death.” That’s because toxins in cheap coffee (Starbucks included) will steal your mental edge and actually make you weak, but clean coffee actually fights cancer and provides antioxidants.

So I use the lowest toxin, highest performance coffee there is (I know, because I created it and tested it!), brew it, and then I blend unsalted grass-fed butter into it. Yes, butter. All the benefits of healthy milk fat with none of the damaging denatured casein proteins found in cream. It makes for the creamiest, most satisfying cup of coffee you’ve ever had. It will keep you satisfied with level energy for 6 hours if you need it. And because I’m having it for breakfast, I’m programming my body to burn fat for energy all day long!

Bulletproof Coffee Recipe

  • Start with 4-500 ml (2 mugs) of black coffee brewed with my mold-free Upgraded Coffee beans.   (Why this is important)
  • Add 2 Tbs (or more, up to 80 grams, about 2/3 of a standard stick of butter) of Kerry Gold or other UNSALTED grass-fed butter
  • Add 30 grams of MCT oil for max energy, weight loss and brain function (this is 6 times stronger than coconut oil, your next best choice)
  • Blend with a pre-heated hand blender, Magic Bullet, or (best) counter top blender until there is a creamy head of foam. (It doesn’t work well if you mix it with a spoon)

It’s really fast and easy to prepare.  Realize salted coffee is a crime. Do not do this with salted butter. Bleah.

Kerrygold butter or another grass-fed brand of butter really matters because corn or soy-fed cows don’t make butter with the same fats. Those butters don’t blend well, don’t taste good, and don’t make you feel Bulletproof.

Grass-fed butter is much healthier than other butter.  It doesn’t make cholesterol levels worse, it optimizes them!  Starting your day with grass-fed butter will give you lots of energy and it will give your body healthy fats that it will use to make cell walls and hormones.

If you’re like most of my friends who try this, your body is so starved for healthy fats that you feel like you can’t get enough. It will take your body a week or two to fully turn on its fat digestion systems when you switch to a high healthy fat breakfast of Bulletproof coffee. If at first it is a little too rich, try using less butter at first and build up to the amount you like. Taking a betaine HCl or digestive enzyme supplement with your coffee will also help your body digest the butter.

Try this just once, with only 2 Tbs of butter, and have nothing else for breakfast. You will experience one of the best mornings of your life, with boundless energy and focus. It’s amazing.

After one drink of Bulletproof coffee, you’ll never be tempted to eat fat-free, insulin-raising, fat-storing toast and oatmeal breakfasts again!

P.S. If you benefit from this post, I’d really appreciate it if you tried my Upgraded Coffee beans. I created them for maximum mental performance and health, and they work, costing $2 more than Starbucks normal beans, and less than their “Reserve” coffee. The proceeds support the research that gets published on this site, and your brain really will notice the difference. Thank you.

P.S.S. Thanks for linking here if you write about Bulletproof Coffee! Bulletproof is a registered trademark for my small company. If you want to use it, just ask!

what about insulin resistance exacerbated by coffee (caffeine)? Great blog!

    • pospos

I have insulin resistance so need to avoid caffeine too – very interested in the answer to this!

      • WestEnd

I am leaving a top level post. Includes @pospos

  • Dave Asprey

An interesting question, Walter. Dr. Reaven, who authored the seminal book about insulin resistance, “Syndrome X,” and I recently had dinner before he spoke at the Smart Life Forum, but we didn’t touch on caffeine unfortunately. This relatively technical link http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/25/2/399.full offers some explanations of caffeine and insulin resistance in detail. Here is a summary of what they say:-Insulin sensitivity was impacted by only 15%, not 40% as is common in obesity. -Caffeine doesn’t actually decrease insulin sensitivity – the increase in epinephrine (adrenaline) probably does, but the study didn’t test that hypothesis.-The findings would not be the same during exercise or hypoglycemia most likely and weren’t tested on type 2 diabetics.-The study didn’t take into account tolerance, which develops very quickly for caffeine. We do know that caffeine is good for weight loss and exercise. It’s a performance enhancing drug in sports and mental tasks. Tim Ferriss and countless others use it for weight loss. If it caused significant insulin resistance, it wouldn’t work for weight loss over time..

I think that if it has any influence over that at all it’s the way it messes with sleep patterns. There’s this whole complex interplay between hormones and neurotransmitters when you don’t get enough sleep at night in a dark enough room. To the extent that coffee messes with that, you’d want to cut it back. I try to get my coffee as early in my day as possible and I don’t drink more than two cups most days.

  • Leon

Hi Dave,Thanks for taking the time to blog and disseminate all of this information. Especially all of the down to earth, practical , day to day stuff. Is the butter-cino the entirety of your breakfast? no protein?

  • Dave Asprey

If I want to be in ketosis fastest, it’s coffee/butter/MCT oil blended. If I’m exercising or want more protein, I’ll add a smoothie with 1-3 raw eggs and collagen protein, or occasionally certain safe kinds of whey.

    • http://nils.kilden-pedersen.net/ nilskp

Could you elaborate on that smoothie/shake recipe? What do you use as base? Water presumably?

      • Dave Asprey

        Coffee!

    • Jacob Haskins

Why not pasteurized liquid egg product instead of raw egg and avoid salmonella?

      • Dave Asprey

Salmonella is on 1 in 45,000 commercial eggs. Washing it removes the risk to effectively zero. (the ref for that is in my upcoming book). Raw eggs have enzymes in them that pasteurized don’t. Plus, my risk is from 4 eggs I inspect myself vs some company that blended 100,000 eggs…if one of them was bad, or the machinery was contaminated, I’ll get sick. Less processing = better.

        • Dale Watkins

What about adding eggs directly to this coffee recipe? Has anyone ever tried it? Seems to streamline the entire process and may add some thickness to the coffee.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=53401532 Lisa Fabiny

I wouldn’t recommend adding the egg yolk to hot coffee as it will cook it, and cooked yolks are leaders in atherosclerotic plaques.

      • Anonymous

I have more of a chance of falling down the stairs than I do getting salmonella. And check out the ingredients list on those “pasteurized egg products” sometime. Ew.

  • Leon

Hot tip: if you don’t have a magic bullet or other mixer you can use a protein powder shaker. I tried one of the ones with the metal wire ball and it worked great!

  • Zingbo

Great stuff. Since i’m naturally jittery – Is decaf ok or is that toxic somehow?

    • Anonymous

It depends on how it is decaffeinated. Check the label. It must be water-decaffeinated or else they probably used hexane. Which is stupid because caffeine is water-soluble, but if I totally understood the food industry mode of thinking I probably would not be able to sleep at night.

Anyway. And I suspect there is a taste difference as well as a difference in toxin levels. Every time I drink decaf it grosses me out–there’s always a hint of Eau de Chemical Soup.

  • optionzz

I LOVE this coffee…with grass fed butter. What do you think of raw, ground cocoa beans featured at healthfood stores? I put a teaspoon of it in and blend with butter/coffee. There is not sugar at all and it creates a flavor sort of like…coffee and chocolate! It is supposed to have all sorts of antioxidents in it.

  • Dave Asprey

@optionzz – if you’re adding cocoa to the coffee, it doesn’t need to be raw (you’re cooking it in the coffee!) But it makes for a nice mocha flavor. As long as you have quality cocoa without mold contamination (a common problem with cocoa) you would be doing good things health-wise.

  • Albert

I once emailed Trader Joe’s corporate asking them if they could verify whether the KerryGold brand of butter they sell is indeed from grass fed cows. But they replied that they could not verify this. :-( So, I’m hoping maybe you know something more about this question. How can I be sure it really is from grass fed cows? Thanks very much for your blog.

    • Anonymous

It’s from Ireland. I don’t think they have “progressed” to the point yet of confining their dairy cattle to barns.

  • walter

” That’s because toxins in cheap coffee (Starbucks included) will steal your mental edge and actually make you weak, but clean coffee actually fights cancer and provides antioxidants.”what should we look for when selecting a brand of coffee?

  • walter

my research into coffee roasters in the Vancouver B.C. area indicates that coffee fitting the criteria that Dave specified may be found at:

    mogianacoffee.com
    49thparallelroasters.com
    elysiancoffee.com
    mojacoffee.com
    originscoffee.com (organic)
    rocanini.com
doichaancoffee.com (thailand organic)roasted in calgary alberta and can be found at a costco road show occasionally.

All of the roasters share these common factors:

    wet processed
    fermented washed
    sun dried
    single origin
    high altitude

Dave what would be your opinion on sun dried beans from thailand? It is high altitude grown coffee, but would the enviroment (humidity) lead to mould growth due to the region in which it is sun dried?

What is you opinion on organic vs coventional? I understand that conventional coffee plants are heavily pesticided.

    • Dave Asprey

Walter, cool analysis! Did you see the latest post on 3 steps to finding coffee shops? Your list is great. I’d suggest removing the sun dried beans though – they are almost always moldier and lower quality than properly treated ones. They sometimes taste great, but I’m recommending great taste AND great mental performance. That’s hard to do when you dry the beans outside in the sun where bugs can eat them and birds can…well you know what on them. :)

  • Zak Ryan

Dave, Is there some effect of salted butter aside from defanging of the bitterness of the coffee?

I had a hard enough time finding any Kerrygold at all, I was not in a position to be choosy.

I’m also having a hard time penetrating the shield people put around the source of their coffee where I live. The only parts of the checklist i could confirm in the coffee i’m trying is that it is %100 arabica and single source.

    • Dave Asprey

I could handle salted butter in yak butter tea, but in coffee, it’s unsalted only. Salty make coffee taste awful. :)

I just wrote a post on finding good coffee – try it!

  • http://roadbikingsucks.com/spiritualitio Tom

I go into work at about 4 PM, and for the past two days I have had bulletproof coffee. Definitely puts me in a good mood. I actually swear by drinking a super-smoothie upon waking in the morning :-)

I used organic coffee from Trader Joes, I ground the beans myself, and I made the coffee in a french press. The butter(used about 1.5 ounces) I bought is German grass fed and hormone free, from Whole Foods. I put the coffee in a to-go mug from Starbucks, and I shook-up the concoction. I suppose I could find better coffee, and I would be willing to buy it online, if you have any links in mind.

I work at a restaurant, and I have decided to stop drinking the coffee at work. Bulletproof coffee, on the drive in, does me well enough, and if I am really craving a hot bev at work, I have green tea.

Is “Taking a betaine HCl or digestive enzyme supplement” necessary, if I don’t have any apparent trouble digesting the butter and coffee?

    Any other pointers?

    • Dave Asprey

Hi Tom – thanks for the update! I replaced my smoothie with bulletproof coffee and found I felt better, with more energy, and more fat burning and muscle growth. A post on the reason for that is coming up! I’m interested in the brand of your German grass fed butter – don’t know of any from Germany!

The enzyme isn’t necessary if you feel fine on the coffee. Some people, notably vegans or vegetarians or low fat dieters, have taught their bodies not to be able to digest fat. They benefit greatly from the enzymes, but if you’re feeling fine, they aren’t necessary, although they may still be healthy.

    • Rick

Is there evidence that organic coffee is less likely to be moldy than non-organic?

      • Dave Asprey

There is not evidence I’ve seen, in fact the opposite may be true. High quality coffee, organic or not, is better than just average organic coffee. But the healthiest is mold-free organic coffee. Much of what I drink isn’t organic, but it’s the best you can get.

  • http://roadbikingsucks.com/spiritualitio Tom

P.S. I just read the post about finding the best coffee in any city. Thanks!

  • Clay

What kind of hand blender are you using? All the ones I’ve seen are a lot bigger. Thanks!

    • Dave Asprey

I went to Amazon and searched for “aerolatte” and bought a cheap knock off for $5. I have an Aerolatte and it’s not nearly as good as the cheaper ones. :) “battery operated hand blender” is another search term to try.

  • Ronn

Hi Dave, I’m new to your site and all the fascinating information here, so if my question has already been asked and answered elsewhere, I haven’t found it yet.

I’ve had dairy allergies since childhood. Could I substitute extra virgin coconut oil for the butter in Bulletproof Coffee? If not, any other suggestions on replacements for dairy?

I’m a 95-99 percent raw food vegetarian (a vegetarian for 35 years; raw foodie for 4 years). I eat eggs occasionally, and can tolerate small amounts of raw goat milk cheese once in a while (is raw goat milk cheese evil?). Is there a place for me in the Bulletproof Diet plan?

    Thanks!

    • Dave Asprey

@Ronn, all of the anti-aging doctors I work with have told me the same thing (except one raw vegan guy): that vegetarians (and esp vegans) are harming their health vs a careful omnivorous diet. I did do a raw vegan diet for 3 months and felt great at first, but after a while I felt like something was missing. The initial “feeling great” comes from getting less toxins from poor quality, overcooked meat. The longer term sub-optimal health most people get is from a lack of healthy fats and vitamins. I continued on the raw diet for another 4 5 months or so, but included raw meat and eggs. Never felt better, but when I was going to Tibet for a trip, I drew the line at raw aged yak. Raw takes a lot of time so I don’t do it as much as I once did, but my health hasn’t suffered now that I control toxins. That said, here is what you can do and still be veg: (I’m also dairy intolerant btw)

Use ghee, or clarified butter. Most people can handle grass fed butter even if milk upsets their stomach. If the trace amounts of protein in butter still bother you, clarify it. Ghee is a superfood like coconut oil, and the combination is the 2nd best you can find. The very best is MCT oil + ghee. That’s what I take when I have time to make it, both for fat loss and for brain function. Worth your time to try – I think you’ll feel a super improvement in how you feel.

Use whey and lots of raw eggs, especially yolks.

Substitue virgin coconut oil, and add extra MCT directly. http://www.upgradedself.com/Food-Upgrades/MCT-Oil/flypage.tpl.html

Thanks! It had never occurred to me to combine two of my favorite things: coffee and clarified butter! It’s already late in the day, but I’m tempted to make some right now :) .

    • Dave Asprey

@Brent, clarified butter (ghee) is awesome. Gives the coffee a toffee kind of taste.

      • Dustin Bopp

This inspired me to clarify some butter for the first time and add it to my coffee. It’s really amazing. I’ve described it to my friends as tasting like a Werthers Original without the sugar. I try to make my own butter from raw, grass-fed milk I get from the local farmer’s market. Unfortunately, while easy, it takes a LOT of milk to get a small amount of butter. And then once clarified it’s even less so I mostly go with Kerrry Gold I get from Trader Joe’s. I have been intermittent fasting (8 hour eating window a day — basically lunch and dinner) for several months with only black coffee during the fasting hours. Since becoming fat adapted through a Primal diet its easy for me to breeze through hours without eating. About a week ago I started adding the clarified butter to my coffee since I understand the fat will not interrupt the fast. Dave, what are your thoughts about IF-ing?

  • http://roadbikingsucks.com/spiritualitio Tom

Dave, you mentioned some interest in the German butter I buy at Whole Foods in Reno. Well, here it is:

Why 1/2 tbsp of butter instead of 1 tbsp of heavy whipping cream?

They seem to have about the same nutrient profiles[1], butter is made from whipping cream[2], and the cream stays dispersed in my coffee as it cools instead of forming an oil slick on top like the butter does[3].

[1] http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/dairy-and-egg-products/133/2 and http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/dairy-and-egg-products/51/2 as my nutritional references. You will need to adjust the serving sizes to tablespoons and divide the butter data in half for the comparison.

    [2]http://www.misshomemade.com/homemadebutterrecipe.html

[3] Personal experience: no matter how much I foam the butter in the hot coffee, as the coffee cools, the foam turns into lipid pools which then join to form an oil slick on top of my coffee. I am a slow coffee drinker because I hate burning my mouth so this is a real problem for me. It seems like this is an illustration of the old adage that “oil and water don’t mix.” When the coffee is cool, I am drinking grease and regular black, bitter, coffee instead of a creamy latte because of the separation.

    • Anonymous

Someone who is allergic to casein will be happy to enlighten you as to what the difference is. Although, they should therefore be using ghee, not butter, in their coffee. Gets that last little bit of milk solids out.

Cream doesn’t bother me so that’s what I use. Happily, the type I use is from grass-fed cows and no gums or thickeners (or skim milk! I’m lookin at you, Kroger!!!) have been added.

      • Jacob Haskins

Does the churning of cream into butter really transform casein protein into something that doesn’t trigger allergic reactions? (Cheese making OTOH actually separates the different milk proteins.)

I know that cream is, by far, mostly milk fats to begin with, so that still doesn’t answer my question about why butter is better.

There is no separation of food components when transitioning from cream to butter.

The only argument I can think of in butter’s favor is that it comes in smaller, more convenient packaging.

        • Rick

If you take a quart of cream and shake it in a jar for five minutes, you’ll see the fat separate from the “buttermilk”. This will give you a lump of butter and about a half cup buttermilk. The buttermilk contains the casein and the butter is mostly fat. Do a search on youtube for how to make butter.

        • Dave Asprey

Butter mostly removes casein, but cultured butter goes further because the enzymes break down the casein. Ghee is virtually casein free!

      • http://twitter.com/nthmost Naomi Most

        *raises hand*

I’m allergic to casein, but the small amounts in butter have never been a problem for me.

It takes about 2 Tbsp of cream to get enough casein to trigger my reaction. Which means, happily, I can tolerate a LOT more butter!

  • Mark

I now have this every morning along with a smoothie. It took a little faith to get past the thought of butter in my coffee (same with raw eggs in my smoothie) but I love both! BTW I’m not “overweight” but I’ve dropped 10lbs/2 inches (goodbye love handles) and I’m not dieting…just bulletproofing what I eat.

I need to figure out how to do this when I’m traveling.

I heard in one of the Podcasts you said to use a paper filter to filter out the oils in the coffee. I don’t remember why though. Many coffee snobs like myself use a French Press to make coffee which leaves the oils intact. Is there anything harmful in the oils?

Dave, thank you for this coffee! My breakfast now it’s just this coffee :) . I lost 29 pounds since I started drinking this coffee (from 198 pounds to 169 in 3 months).

At the beginning I was drinking this coffee for breakfast and there is always something I ate. But week later since I started drinking this coffee I did not feel hungry until the evening. Now my breakfast it’s just this coffee. For lunch I usually drink a liter of organic kefir. And I eat something more about 6-7 pm (fishes, lamb, broccoli etc). That’s it. And I didn’t do anything by force. Changes were happening spontaneously, easily :) .

Hey Dave — I started drinking a milkshake inspired by your recommendations: Blend 1 cup pastured/grass-fed/organic milk, 2 tablespoons organic almond butter, 1 tablespoon extra virgin, organic coconut oil. Tastes amazing — any thoughts on this combination? Wanted to check before I make this a staple (or begin recommending it).

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=53401532 Lisa Fabiny

I would recommend switching from the cow’s milk to coconut milk. Better types of fats and tastes rather divine. You can also switch from the almond butter to the grass fed, cow’s milk butter. I’m not sure of the benefits of almond butter, but good cow’s butter is great for increasing your stomach acid (via high levels of butyric acid).

If you are interested in a good smoothie, I blend frozen, organic berries with coconut milk, cocoa powder, stevia, cinnamon, why protein, and a tablespoon of MCT oil. It’s quite good and the cocoa powder has been researched and shown to raise HDL levels significantly (I know it’s raised mine).

Hmmm… My wife steered me onto this site. She specifically mentioned the “bulletproof coffee.” I already do something similar to this, but probably not optimally, since I have been using decaf instant (ok, enough with the groans, already). I decided to get off the caffeine a few months back, and I spent a week enduring almost crippling headaches, so I’m not going back on that particular route unless I come across some solid, credible evidence that caffeine is actually beneficial.

I blend 6 oz of boiling water with some whey powder, olive oil, coconut oil, and butter. Most mornings.

Looks like I will just have to try Kerry Gold (and better coffee) to check to see if it really makes a difference. Guess I will need to locate some MCT oil again (don’t remember where I got it, and don’t recall any special benefit, but maybe I just wasn’t doing it right). I will probably keep the coconut oil, too. BTW, I have discovered that a small pinch of Xanthan gum will keep oil in suspension a bit longer. Glucomannan has a similar effect, but more than just a tiny bit of Glucomannan loosens the bowels. Cream, BTW, has some natural detergents in it that will also help keep oil in suspension.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=53401532 Lisa Fabiny

ouch. Don’t put in the whey powder! The boiling water will denature the proteins in the whey, and heating olive oil is never a good idea either as it oxidizes the cholesterol.

Hi Dave, I’ve been drinking this coffee with butter for 3 days now. Its an amazing feeling, I’m happy to report. I feel like it gives me more non-jittery energy from one cup of this ‘bulletproof coffee’ than from 2 cups of coffee without butter. I haven’t found the MCT oil yet, though I can get organic, cold pressed coconut oil here in Panama and am going to buy some today.

Though I have to admit that I feels great about 30 minutes after drinking this combo, I’m still concerned that I’m drinking a ton of butter and wondering about any side effects, cholesterol, etc. 2 tbs of butter is a LOT to throw in your morning coffee 5 – 6 days a week and suck down. If 2 tbs = 1 oz., that’s 5 – 6 ounces of pure butter per week. Check out the nutrition info on that here http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/dairy-and-egg-products/133/2 I have to admit that its mostly greek to me.

I tend to cook just about everything in butter, but I’m curious if you could expound a bit on exactly why this combination works this way. I’d hate to fall victim to the “I read it on the Internet, so it must be true” phenomenon I’ve chuckled at other people for sooo many times.

As the entire world drinks coffee non-stop and has for tens of thousands of years, I can typically find support and information on just about anything that common online in 100 places. It concerns me that there are so few mentions of coffee with butter anywhere else that are positive. There’s a few people saying that it happens here and there, usually in other combinations of tea, chai or with much less butter.

I’m actively involved in lifestyle design and really working to become healthier, stronger and improve my quality of life through diet and exercise. Tim Ferris’ books are incredible and I’m researching a lot more. Your site has become a destination for me, but I’d love to know more about specifically why this works. Thanks for taking the time…

Despite 4 decades of attempts to do so, there has not been any study that conclusively demonstrates that dietary saturated fat or dietary cholesterol will increase heart attack (or any other health) risk.

This is the fraud committed by Ancel Keys in his cherry-picking 22-country “study”. He merely threw out the data from the 15 countries that contradicted what he already believed, and used the data from 7 countries that appeared to support what he already believed.

Will your coffee be roasted in such a way as to preserve the polyphenols? I see that the Rich Rewards Breakfast Blend by Life Extension is advertising this benefit. This may be a new product.

    • http://armilegge.com Armistead Legge

Yes. Bulletproof Coffee is roasted by the #1 roaster in the U.S. in such a way that preserves all of it’s polyphenol content. In fact, roasted coffee has a higher antioxidant capacity than green.

I have been doing my coffee with the butter ever since Andrew told me about it. Recently, I got a bit lazy and just used organic coconut cream in it and I want to tell everyone….. it made a difference. I started getting hungry about 10:30 – 11 AM. I have not felt that in forever. I also did not have the same get up and go as normal. I went back to my butter coffee and am feeling right back on top of my game. Needless to say, I will not be “getting lazy” any time soon again! LOL
Thanks for all of your great tips and products.

    • Howard Lee Harkness

Coconut cream? Try adding coconut OIL. Has roughly the same effect as butter for me. I will sometimes add a bit of MCT oil, butter, and coconut oil — the grassfed butter is expensive, and I try to stretch it.

BTW, since I use stevia to sweeten my coffee, salted butter actually makes the coffee taste sweeter — and then, I use the old Navy trick for brewing coffee, namely, a pinch of salt on top of the grounds causes the bitter oils to coagulate and stick to the paper filter, which improves the taste substantially.

      • Dave Asprey

Howard, if your coffee has bitter oils, it’s not Bulletproof to start with! Coconut oil tastes good, but it won’t foam. A half lb of Kerry Gold is $2.69.

  • Lauren

Dave, just wanted to thank you for inspiring my husband and I to change from a mostly vegan diet to your modified Paleo diet, along with the Bulletproof coffee program. We use the Kerry Gold unsalted butter with Artisan Coconut cream and little bit of organic coconut milk blended in organic coffee. We’ve been doing this since October. Also, I started adding MCT oil to our protein shakes made with Designer Whey protein, fresh spinach, a few strawberries and blueberries, organic ground flax seed, and chia seeds. This is usually our lunch (sometimes I’ll eat raw oatmeal with walnuts and coconut milk for a late breakfast). Since adding the high quality EFAs to our diet, and removing all gluten (no bread, pasta, etc), and being careful with veggies / fruits that convert to sugar (corn and potatoes, bananas), I’ve not had my monthly migraine headache ever since. At 59 years of age, this is the first time I’ve not had any migraines!! These blinding headaches would force me to take Ibuprofen or some other powerful pharma drug to knock them out, or else, the headache would knock me out. Also, I have not gained any weight, maintaining my 110 lbs effortlessly. Everything else is healthy, skin, bones, cholesterol, energy levels, sleeping well, etc.
I share this for your readers to let them know that your program really works!! Thank you again!

I live in a really rural area, but was in a larger city about 3 hours away earlier this week and we stopped by a whole foods store and picked up some grass fed butter (we got quite a bit so hopefully it will last for a little while). We had already ordered some coffee online that meets your criteria for a “cleaner” coffee.

I have to say, we’ve really been enjoying our bulletproof coffee the past couple of days…

  • Howard Lee Harkness

Just got back from a Caribbean cruise. Stuffed myself all week. All the lobster, steak, eggs, pork, chicken, prime rib, etc. I could eat. And I got some stares for putting the butter in coffee — I used at least 6-8 pats of butter every day.

Did not do much exercise, either. Mostly caught up on reading & sitting in a hot tub.

    Lost one pound.

Hey Dave! When given the option, would you use ghee or butter in the bulletproof coffee? And if ghee, use the same amount, or less?

    • http://armilegge.com Armistead Legge

Depends on your sensitivity to dairy, whether or not it was grass-fed, etc.

    • Dave Asprey

Ghee is better for you, very slightly, but you need a better blender. I use 20% less ghee.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dseilhan74 Dana Seilhan

To answer the question about amount, the big difference between ghee and butter is the trace protein content. I’d say use the same amount that you would use for regular butter.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=53401532 Lisa Fabiny

I would recommend butter unless you have a sensitivity to casein (as I do). I wouldn’t recommend ghee over clarified butter however. There seems to be a much larger amount of oxidized cholesterol in the ghee when compared to butter. Clarified butter has significantly less oxidized cholesterol than ghee as it is cooked less and isn’t browned (which is where ghee gets it’s nutty taste), but more than regular butter. Take your pick. I tend to eat goat’s milk butter (organic, grass-fed) just because it has the benefits of no oxidized cholesterol (like regular butter) but has significantly less casein than cow’s milk, meaning I’m much less sensitive to it.

What are your thoughts on putting your protein powder in the coffee?

        • dahlia

I put cocoa in my coffee, or is it vice versa. And half and half. And spices. And vanilla. And no sweetener. Seems like a fine place for maca. Taste it and see.

I put my maca in a green smoothie or if I forget in a salad.

        • Rick Pack

Dave has said that using his protein powder is fine but you want to avoid high-heat and blending it for more than a very brief time to avoid denaturing and damaging the protein micro-fractions, respectively.

Is it a total “no no” to add a small bit of raw sugar to the cup of coffee?

        • Dave Asprey

It is a bad idea! Use erythritol, xylitol or stevia!

Sent from my nobile phone. You understand….

        • http://twitter.com/TugSound TugSound

Dr. Oz recently had an episode that discouraged the use of artificial sweeteners. He stated they have side effects such as weight gain, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. Pure stevia only (without additives). I use Sweet Leaf.

        • Howard

Oz, Ornish, Weil, McDougall, et. al. are right less often than a stopped clock. However, in this case, Oz might have accidentally stumbled over part of a real fact. Google “your small intestine has taste buds!”

        • Dave Asprey

Lol – yes, only natural sweeteners (xylitol erythritol stevia)!

All those guys (Ornish et all) mean well – they’re not evil. Just not systems thinkers…

        • Nater

Thinking that Xylitol and Erythritol are more natural than unprocessed cane or beet sugar is just ridiculous. Those are completely man-produced (xylitol comes from hydrogenated wood sugars) and there’s no possible way you can call them “natural.”

As an additional point of discussion, I have actually built and flown a rocket using erythritol as the fuel. Erythritol was my rocket fuel. Think on that.

Granted, the lower calorie density and glycemic index impact is worth mention, but calling them “natural” is fallacious.

        • doug shytle

In fact, any sugar purified from its source plant by a process involving high temperatures will be “unnatural.” Moreover, if the sugar source plant was grown in mineral depleted soil (as is the case with sugar cane), the sugars within will be less natural regardless of the purification process. Why? Because when plants are grown in natural mineral rich soil, the sugars’ crystaline structures are stablized by certain minerals. These natural sugar mineral complexes are lost under high temperatures used in the sugar refining process.

However, your rocket fuel analogy is irrelevant as most powdered dry sugars, including glucose, are highly combustible, even explosive under the right conditions.

Yes, xylitol and erythritol are primarily used because of their lower calorie density and glycemic index, but also because they both “starve” harmful bacteria.

        • http://twitter.com/basic_Laser basiclaser

The idea of ‘natural vs unnatural’ is a complete waste of time. Do any of you think coffee or butter are ‘natural’? I think it’s a false paradigm and would personally argue that everything is ‘natural’ even nuclear power, which occurs in nature (stars). Stop thinking in these terms and look for solid evidence of benefits and health risks.

        • KM

Anybody tried coconut crystals?? read about them – I use them for all kinds of things — they are great.

        • KaliMa

How is coffee unnatural? Because it is fermented, dried, roasted, ground and brewed? So chocolate is unnatural too? How long were the Aztec and Maya consuming a chocolate beverage?

        • Kate D

I always put sugar in my coffee. Today is the first day I have tried this recipe and it was so good and creamy, it did NOT need any sweetening. I know this may sound dramatic, but I will only drink coffee like this from now on. Thank YOU!

        • Abobolico

I had the same experience. I was adding stevia to my BP coffee at first but one day I forgot the stevia at my parent’s home.

    Question:
I know that you are recommending high quality coffee. But what about us poor folk that can’t afford it? (I’m not talking about being cheap or frugal – but that there just isn’t enough money to spread out.) Will I get any good benefit by just using my Folgers? Oddly I have access to good quality butter – my friend milks her grass fed dairy cows :)

    • Dave Asprey

Mbc-andy, you’re better off skipping the folgers and buying good quality coffee, grinding it very very finely, and brewing it very hot. You can make a pound of coffee last a long, long time that way. Or, you can blend the powder into a smoothie and just consume the entire bean for the health effects. Folgers and other low-end robusta coffees are bad news from a Bulletproof perspective.

Does anyone else have this problem? Do the butter and coconut oil (my replacement for MCT oil) cut through the coffee? I still think it tastes pretty good, but I would like to taste a bit more of the coffee. Help!

    • Dave Asprey

I use 28 grams of coffee to 415ml of water, and the water is heated to 195-200 degrees. If you’re using a drip coffee maker, the water isn’t usually hot enough to brew proper coffee!

    • Dave Asprey

Thank you! I prefer the Blend-tec or Vitamix. The Magic Bullet doesn’t work that well for coffee because the hot coffee is sealed in it, and the steam pressure pushes the coffee through the seals relatively quickly. I ruined one this way. Plus, the bigger blenders make the best foam. ?

Inspired by my recent discovery of your site, I decided to try Bulletproof Coffee for 3 consecutive days last week. The mental effects were amazing. I have been off of coffee for about 5 years as well as virtually dairy free for about 3 years. I have had issues with dairy related to sinus problems for as long as I can remember. But, thinking that maybe I could tolerate some grass-fed butter and really wanting to see this work, I decided to run the experiment. I used Kerry Gold the first day and then a grass-fed ghee the next two days. On the fourth day, I woke up with my first my bout of sinusitis/allergic rhinitis (or whatever the hell it technically is) in about 3 years. I was not overtired or stressed prior to the experiment and I have been following a diet (ultra clean Paleo) that I would say is about 95% close to the Bulletproof Diet for the past 3 years. I desperately want to think something else triggered this and I wonder what your thoughts are

    • Dave Asprey

Well, that’s a bummer. You may be VERY dairy allergic. Or you may be undergoing a herxheimer reaction. Run experiment again with just ghee. Use Xlear nasal spray during it to keep sinuses clean and reduce chances of infection.
I’d consider a blood test to see if you’re really allergic to casein or if something else is going on. I know dozens of people who’ve had allergy relief from acupuncture or NAET. It’s worth exploring.
If you want similar benefits, you can do coconut oil/cream with MCT oil in the coffee, then take 6 grams of butyric acid. Not as good for you as butter, but may be the solution for you.

Carnecasa, have you looked into using a neti pot for your sinus issue? Use only the special salt they recommend, not table salt, or it will burn your tissues. You can add in hydrogen peroxide also, a tablespoon or 2. I have read people using Willard’s Water as a nasal spray in throat and nose has done wonders for numerous aliments.

      • carnecasa

Thanks TrueVision. I have been using neti for years. In fact I use SinuPulse. I didn’t know about hydrogen peroxide or Willard’s Water though so thanks for that. Since my original post several months ago, I switched to grassfed ghee from Pure Indian Foods for my Bulletproof Coffee and have had not sinus issues since! I think I discovered my sensitivity is to casein for ghee is golden!

  • Linhares Lucio

    Hi,
I used to do inttermitent fast and was going fine but now with ur bulletproof coffe it is much better, I am a professional MMA fighter and I need the energy to perform better. I have a question for u, can I use coconut butter instead of coconut oil and can I play with the ratio, doing for example 50/50?

    • Dave Asprey

Hi Linhares – you’re the second MMA pro fighter I know who is on the Bulletproof program! You can use coconut butter vs oil, but I find that the average coconut butter has more toxins in it (from the fermentation process that’s used often to make it) than coconut oil. The highest performance you can get is by adding the MCT I recommend, which has 6x more C8,10 than coconut oil. It’s a big difference!

      • Linhares Lucio

        Thank u very much:)

Major fan of the Bulletproof coffee. How long would it last in a thermos? Would the health benefits be depleted if its stored for about 4 hours? And how do I convince my wife this is healthy thing and not going to give me a heart attack since butter has a bad rap? – Jeff

    • Dave Asprey

It lasts fine in a thermos; I do that a lot. You can shake it up to get the butter frothy again too!
For you wife, send her to our blog, or get her a copy of Gary Taubes’ “Why We Get Fat.” She’ll be snacking on butter in no time too! ?

      • Jeffrey

        Thanks Dave! Appreciate it.

Oh and my real question was: How many tablespoons of grounds do you put in for two cups? 2? 4?

    • Dave Asprey

It’s hard to use tbsp. because grind density matters a lot. Fine ground will weigh more than coarse ground, and brew method matters. I use 28 grams of coffee in 450ml of water. ?

  • danna kinsky

Dave, Thank you for your work. I recently met you at BIL and have been drinking your coffee since. I still get a bit of a stomach ache / headache and wondering if you might know why. I’m a long time vegetarian, and I drink your coffee with Lactaid milk and raw honey. I tried getting the butter, but all they had at whole foods (in Los Angeles) is lightly salted butter, and like you said, a crime. ( and yuck, i tried ).

    so my questions are:

    1. why still the stomach ache ?
    2. is it still ok, aka not harmful to the benefits to use Lactaid full (not low fat) milk and honey ?
    3. I had an idea and I was wondering your thought about it – I am still using a filter coffee machine and not an espresso machine. Can I brew one cup of coffee and several hours later, re-brew from the same beans ?
    4. lastly – do you have things you can do with the leftover beans ?
I have been saving them, and wondering if you toss them / re-use them / re-purpose them. I have noticed after a week or so when left of the counter in a wooden bowl they became a bit moldy.
    5. Where can one find the correct butter if not at whole foods ?

    Thanks again !

  • JHunterW

Hey there. I just made my first ever cup of bulletproof coffee using your upgraded bulletproof coffee….and wow! I have never liked coffee, but I am truly a believer now! I mixed in creatine and anircetam and have been just amazingly focused all day (studying for tests). I recall you mentioning that after you have gotten good and used to being in ketosis you could add a small amount of sugar to your coffee along with the sweetener (I use stevia) and would have the sugar high without the crash. I have been on the BP diet fully for 4 weeks (only had 2 splurge days so far) and cut sugar entirely out, dropped 10 pounds of nothing but fat, still have all my muscle, but I was considering the advantages to having that sugar high, especially in combination with bulletproof coffee for my early classes/tests. Do you think this would be acceptable and how much sugar is too much in the case of not getting a crash? Thanks so much!

    • Dave Asprey

Sugar is not a good idea in the morning. You could do 2 tsp of raw honey a half hour before the coffee, but not in the coffee. Xylitol for sweet is ok though in the coffee.

      • danna kinsky

How come no honey in the coffee ? Also, please reply to my questions underneath ===>

        • Dave Asprey

Honey in hot coffee is not raw and it changes the metabolic effects of the meal. Anti ketogenic

        • danna kinsky

I knew that honey can not be heated / boiled because it actually turns toxic, but the same people that told me that said its structure does not change when you put it in hot water / tea / coffee (and not microwave / heat it up ) — is this what you are referring to when you say anti ketogenic ?

        • Dave Asprey

Simply that fructose in honey can shut down ketosis.

        • http://www.facebook.com/alaskafishing Marc Theiler

100% agree! Better off changing your habits away from a sugar-based intake high. It takes a while to ween yourself off of the narcotic (sugar), but it can be done.

        • Zack_Leman

I thought you said if you take 3 teaspoons of raw honey at night before sleep it would not shut down ketosis.

        • Steve

bump… I’m doing the honey thing too because I haven’t yet figured out why low carb makes me sleep poorly

    • Dave Asprey

That’s quite a stack! I’d take the creatine and aniracetam as pills/powder rather than mix in the coffee for flavor and heat stability though! ?

      • http://www.facebook.com/alaskafishing Marc Theiler

I agree with Dave. I am a HUGE fan of aniracetam. It’s best to make a separate concoction.

Here’s what I do as a part of my morning ritual:

        1. A version of BP coffee – quad shot espresso, 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed butter, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, 1/8 c or less of heavy whipping cream, 1/8 coconut milk.

        2. Brain solution: 2 tablespoons of MCT Oil (The kind on upgraded self), 750mg Aniracetam, 250mg Pramiracetam, 1-2g of Choline Bitartrate, 250mg of caffeine
        b. DHEA, Acetyl l-carnitine, Fish Oil, Vit D, Multi-Vit

        3. Whey Isolate – 13g (Not a drop more to ensure not to agitate insulin levels. 5-10g of Creatine

This is just in the morning. I eat nothing until 1, and when I do it’s sans carbs.

I am always looking to dial in my routine – yet this is a bad-ass start of one. I will never start a day off without my routine – it makes such an incredible difference that it’s hard to put into words.

  • Marilyn Olmsted

    Hello everyone,
Just got my coffee and have my first cup in hand….I added 1 tsp of sugar. Does that ruin the benefits? I usually drink my reg coffee with grass fed whole milk and 2tsp organic unprocessed cane sugar.

    • Niall F

Hi Marilyn! Here’s my limited understanding and long winded answer…… Cortisol is the super morning time fat burner as long as insulin levels remain low. Skipping breakfast (Intermittent Fasting) ensures that there’s no spike in morning insulin as a result of eating lots of carbs but having a Bulletproof coffee for breakfast also doesn’t result in an insulin spike and in fact speeds up the whole fat burning process (in addition to lots of other benefits).

So, very simplistically, I believe that by adding sugar it will spike the insulin secretion and thus put a halt to all the good work being done by the cortisol.

Then again, I could be way off the mark!! Would love to hear from someone else on this.

Here’s a very good blog from a guy that comments here a lot, …http://theidealstate.com/nutrition/skip-breakfast-lose-weight/

FJ, you’re not alone! Most people are skeptical of this until they try it. I can’t describe my apprehension when I first threw a chunk of butter into my coffee in the blender. One taste had me convinced…but it was a hurdle to try. ?

  • Peter Moeller

I was kinda wondering.. Is there a specific reason that salted butter is a crime?.. in Denmark grass-fed butter is imposible to buy.. Only salted grass-fed butter with an amount of 1,2 % salt.. But I have to say.. it taste wonderful and I have all rdy lost 3 kg (6.6 lbs) in 3 weeks.. So.. Is there anything else except the taste that makes it a crime?..
And btw.. thx for a great recipe!.. It is well-used in Denmark!

    • Dave Asprey

Hi Peter! So glad you’re enjoying Bulletproof Coffee. The only problem with salted butter is that it doesn’t taste as good in coffee. Feel free to have all the salted butter you like!

      • Luluweezie

I accidentally used salted butter today and didn’t like the taste of saltiness in my coffee, so I added a bit of maple syrup (this won’t work if you’re fasting, I guess), and it tasted like kettle corn — salty/sweet. Really yummy!!

I just started trying this 2 mornings ago I love the tast but no noticeable changes in energy. I am only 25 and have always been a morning person. I also before this used to have coffee and protein powder every morning. Anyways I was wondering the science for this and if adding protein in it would be fine? I know protein also triggers mTOR. Along with the science of the coffee I was wondering for studies on how it’s possible to eat so many cal. Without getting fat? Thanks
    Joe

    • Dave Asprey

Coffee inhibits mTOR; it doesn’t trigger it. It’s the rebound of mTOR when the coffee and fast wear off together that triggers the fat loss and muscle gain!
It’s possible to eat this many calories because calories don’t make you fat. Bad calories make you fat. Toxins make you fat. But calories in themselves are a very poor way of predicting what food will do to your weight. Ten calories of arsenic-laced snake venom may kill you even though it’s “protein”. Precision in choice of calories is key.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/VTPM3B6KXRO3PJRL6JUIAHEK5E RickP

What an interesting idea: coffee inhibits mTOR but then mTOR rebounds. Do you have a study you can quickly find with this idea? I’ll try to look for one later as well.

        • Dave Asprey

It’s referenced on the Upgraded Coffee page!

      • Joe

Ok that makes sense I’ve always been from the cal is a cal camp. Are there any studies on the poisens in unhealthy food that contribute to more fat than calories? I guess I’m a nerd and I like to read the studies and research. Also your body isn’t really in a true fast with all the calories from butter is it wouldn’t it then be in the fed state? This is all pretty new to me I’ve been reading other books on fasting recently as well. I’m sorry for all the questions just really interested I’ve been trying to become a healthier person and so I find all of this very interesting.

        • Dave Asprey

There are tons of studies. Look at the posts “It’s not the calories stupid” and the grass-fed series. In short, omega 6 and mycotoxins and xenoestrogens are all major issues.
Fasting with only fat gives you the benefits of fasting but stronger ketosis and more resilience. You can call it fasting or not; the effect is the same. ?

  • Joe

Would adding whey protein to my bullet proof coffee render it useless or make it not have as great of an effect on my health?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/VTPM3B6KXRO3PJRL6JUIAHEK5E RickP

I believe he addressed this in another comment by saying that he sometimes adds whey after the coffee has cooled (to avoid denaturing) and to blend the why lightly, if at all, to avoid damaging the fragile microfractions.

  • http://twitter.com/Clepensky Chris Lepensky

You’re advocating the ingestion of over 40 grams of saturated fat(which is above the recommend daily intake) in one sitting, which has been shown in multiple scientific studies in rats and humans to increase the rate of cognitive decline in individuals.

    • http://twitter.com/GDietBlog GuestDietBlog

Multiple scientific studies, eh? Cite one.

      • http://twitter.com/Clepensky Chris Lepensky
        • http://twitter.com/GDietBlog GuestDietBlog

The link goes to a site that requires registration, which I presume costs money, so I didn’t pursue it. But even without reading the ‘study’, I can guess what vendor the ‘researchers’ used for their high-fat rat chow: Purina Test Diet. Which means that the ‘researchers’ proved that Crisco negatively affects cognitive function in rats, and is known to be toxic to humans. Which I already knew.

        • http://armilegge.com Armistead Legge

Without having access to the full text, there is one obvious problem with this study:

It’s in rats, not people. Rats metabolize fats, carbohydrates, and proteins differently than people. This is also why the rodent research on fructose is meaningless for humans.

It’s also likely the rats were eating other junk with the saturated fat which could also cause mental impairment.

Do you have any human studies showing saturated fat causes cognitive impairment?

        • Yaniv

I would be interesting to here people’s thoughts on this study:
          http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16257476 which includes Human trials.

    • Dave Asprey

That’s an awfully large blanket statement. Whoever wrote those recommendations didn’t understand that different lengths of saturated fat have different effects. MCT and SCT oils – like in butter and coconut – have different effects. The “low saturated fat” recommendations are not borne out in real experiments!

    • http://armilegge.com Armistead Legge

      Care to provide a reference?

    • HomebirthMidwife

Chris, I don’t believe there are any studies coming to these conclusions you state that are using the saturated fat from GRASSFED, pastured animals. Can you please post them, because all the ones I know of that vilify saturated fat and blame it for heart disease (which has since been debunked) only reference grain/corn-fed animal fats. Completely different products nutritionally. The diminishment of healthy fat intake (and the increase of transfat and sugars) by humans has actually contributed to cognitive declines, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

is it still ok, aka not harmful to the benefits to use Lactaid full (not low fat) milk ?

    • Dave Asprey

Lactaid is still full of casein and the other problems with milk. Take probiotics instead of drinking lactaid!

      • danna kinsky

The reason for lactaid milk is not for the probiotics in them, but for the milk itself. i still prefer that taste of the grass fed unsalted butter in the coffee — so even if i add butter, i prefer to also add milk. is regular milk better than lactaid milk or is any milk no good unless its raw milk ? ?

        • Dave Asprey

  • danna kinsky

Can I brew one cup of coffee and several hours later, re-brew from the same beans: With a filter machine or a stovetop espresso maker ?

    • Dave Asprey

You can, but it will taste quite bad. Better to brew 2 cups, and save the hot coffee in a jar for later drinking, either iced or reheated.

      • danna kinsky

i tried it, it tastes very weak in comparison, but not bad… i don’t mind weak coffee personally, i actually prefer it… (weird, i know) – am i still getting the same amount of benefits from the weak coffee as from a new fresh cup ?

        • Dave Asprey

    Hello,

Can I make my green tea, possibly matcha, bulletproof instead of coffee? I am not really a coffee person. Is there a reason why I should try this with coffee and not green tea?

    • Dave Asprey

Green tea and coffee are both good. They have different and sometimes overlapping benefits. Go for it!

  • Sourpusscandy

How I do it: boil water, brew coffee in a french press, stir. in a bullet cup (blender) add 1tbs coconut oil, 1-2tbs butter, 3 oz half&half, put melitta filter/cone ontop of that, filter the coffee into the bullet cup, about 6 oz, blend that, let the rest of the coffee filter into a mug or two, pour the melted blended fat & coffee into the mugs of brewed coffee. minimal heat loss. oh wow I love this stuff!

    • Dave Asprey

Sounds delicious! Why the half & half? The sugar and inflammatory proteins aren’t going to help you, and it’s probably not even noticeable as a flavor enhancer.

  • K Davis

I’ve recently begun the Bulletproof Diet combined with the Intermittent Fasting protocol. I also have a condition called Interstitial Cystitis and drinking coffee can give me bladder pain. I want to get the best results possible for fat loss. Here are my two questions:

    1. Taking the supplement Prelief with coffee reduces eliminates bladder pain for me, if I take it with Bulletproof Coffee will it adversely affect the fast or fat loss? It contains Calcium glycerophosphate and magnesium stearate.
    2. Would I be able to get the exact same results from green tea with butter and MCT oil, or would the effect be less dramatic? If they produce the *same* results – what kind of green tea should I be looking for? Brands?

    Thanks!

    • Dave Asprey

The prelief supplement seems ok to me. If it’s anti-acid, take it an hour after the coffee. Green tea doesn’t work exactly the same way but it does work. High quality green tea from Japan is your best bet.

    • CV

I had Interstitial Cystitis for years before being properly diagnosed this year in Feb 2012. It was bad I couldn’t leave the house for years to hardly do anything, so much pain! My doctor told me to take a bunch of stuff and Prelief. I ignored her advice and I ate frozen wild blueberries in the mornings and drank nettle tea infusions and stopped consuming acidic foods as frequently (onions, tomatoes, pineapple, etc) for 2 months and my body was able to heal. I would NOT recommend Prelief as it messes with the hydrochloric acid in your stomach. It also is a calcium supplement too, wasn’t there a big snafoo recently about calcium supplements increasing the risk of heart attacks? The only reason you need Prelief is so you can keep eating acidic foods which irritates the bladder linings in some people with IC. If you just stop eating those acidic foods its not necessary to take. Well I got better in less than 2 months, and have not had a relapse. I cannot believe I no longer have to make plans around the bathroom!

I have since learned that blueberries help repair nerve damage, no wonder I felt better when eating them! Nettle tea (dried nettle LEAVES not the root) (Buy in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs in bulk of 1 lb increments, weigh 1 oz and steep in 1 quart of boiling water for 4+ hours, I make at night and steep while sleeping.) You then strain and drink and do this daily so you will need 4 lbs worth for 2 months. Within a few days you should feel relief and keep drinking it, nettle has amazing health benefits its a shame more health nut paleo/raw vegans/etc don’t rely on the help of herbs and instead use supplements. Nettle IS a superfood and its native to North America! :P

I wish you the best and I hope you see this message. At first the nettle might seem like it is not helping as it has a diuretic effect as its cleaning the body but since I now drink the tea daily as it is mineral rich and delicious I have noticed a huge difference and it does not make me need to use the bathroom frequently anymore. I used to have psoriasis too and it has helped heal old scars on my skin since ingesting it for 4 months, its truly a great ally to have!

      • Dave Asprey

What awesome sharing of what works!

Green tea is good but not the same as coffee on MTOR. Prelief is not a good idea as its calcium, but a magnesium oxide capsule may work. Adding fat will help, as it gives the natural acid in your stomach something to emulsify. Staying low carb and eating VERY green on the BP diet could help. Self experimenting to see what works is important. Listen to your body!

I love my Bulletproof Coffee… but with summer coming up, have you figured out a way to make it cold? I have tried to put ice it in and the butter comes out of suspension. Then only thing I can come up with is to make it in an ice cream maker but then that doesn’t make it very quick in the morning….

    • Dave Asprey

Your order of mixing is off!

Blend butter with a small amount of hot coffee and MCT. Add ice and more cooled coffee (or just use hot coffee with butter, then add ice). It won’t work without the MCT.

I pretty much dump it all in while I wait for the coffee to brew, then I put that in and let the Vitamix sort it out!! Thanks!!

Is the Bulletproof coffee contraindicated for those with adrenal issues or Hashimoto’s?

Is it better to use a paper filter or not? I have a gold filter.

Are you still offering a special for those buying an emWave?

    • Dave Asprey

If you have adrenal problems or Hashimotos, you should work with your doctor. I’ve definitely had adrenal burnout (see my video on hacking information overload) and have recovered from stressed adrenal states while drinking one large cup of Upgraded Coffee in the morning, Bulletproof style. The adrenal stressors in coffee largely come from the negative things in coffee. A clean cup of coffee doesn’t have the same effect on your adrenals as a bad cup of coffee. Depending on the state of your adrenals, what else you’re doing to take care of yourself, and your own response to coffee (or any other supplement or food), you should evaluate and decide. I was off coffee for several years before I figured this out.
I completely reversed my Hashimoto’s by strictly giving up gluten, while at the same time drinking my Upgraded Coffee beans. The quality of the beans matters here. There is cross reactivity between mycotoxin and gluten; mycotoxin exposure can trigger gluten sensitivity itself. I found this in my own experience, and Dr. Shoemaker writes about it too.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/VTPM3B6KXRO3PJRL6JUIAHEK5E RickP

Such an important idea that I had not imagined until The Bulletproof Executive, Dave Asprey. Reduce mycotoxins and we reduce food sensitivities along with overall stress.

      • Adlock Hungry

Holy Crap!!! Light bulb moment! I’ve had a host of food intolerances/sensitivities arise since about my early to mid 30′s (I’m 40 now). It started with the primary grains (wheat, barley, rye, etc), but has spread (at least by way of sequential self-discovery) to almost anything grain-like, all legumes, all squash (and probably their relatives, cucumbers & melons), and all nuts. Plus an allergy panel that singled out avocado, casein & ginger among other more minor things. Mid-30′s is about when I started drinking coffee regularly, but I was also a grain/carb-aholic throughout youth including my twenties (endurance athlete). I always assumed that all the grain consumption took its toll, thus leading to my current state. Does the cross reactivity of mycotoxin mean it could CAUSE gluten sensitivity or only that it will also provoke the same immune response?

2nd Question: I’m what you’d call a “hard gainer” who will be perpetually lean no matter what my food choices or amounts. Given my above conditions I’d like to try out the BP Coffee not for weight loss, obviously, but for the healthiest possible choice of something that I really love and would prefer not to give up (I’ve given up enough things fergoonnessake!). I would like to consume it along with my typical giant meal in the morning (eggs + sometimes sweet potato + sometimes bacon, or sometimes a hearty stew/shepherd’s pie), with the benefit of the extra calories I need since, like I said, I am a skinny mofo, and I work out a lot. Whatdya think?
        Cheers?

    • Dave Asprey

There are two ways to make the coffee that work.
The gold filter method maximizes cafestrol and kawehol which have anti-inflammatory effects in the brain, but they also raise LDL cholesterol (in my mind, this is not a problem, as it doesn’t raise oxidized cholesterol, and cholesterol is useful in the body for many things as we write about extensively on the site). People with ADD or ADHD in particular may feel a noticeable difference from using a gold filter.
The paper filter method removes these substances. Your cholesterol doesn’t rise, but you don’t get the benefits of them either.
I prefer the taste of paper filtered pourover Hario V60 brewed coffee, but I prefer the cognitive effects of a gold filter.
If you’re drinking normal (low) quality coffee, I recommend paper filtering all the time. If you’re drinking clean coffee like Upgraded Coffee, the gold filter is a good choice. Either is ok; we’re talking smaller differences here.

      • Mark Na

Is there something special about gold or would a French press with a stainless steel filter work just as well for someone with ADHD? Thank you

So, you’re saying that the gold filter will be better for ADD/ADHD?
I agree about the taste, less bitterness, when using a paper filter, but worth foregoing this for the increased cafestrol.

Thanks also for connecting the dots between gluten and Hashimoto’s- I’ve been learning about this, and the imperative to use the Upgraded coffee in this situation.

I gave up drinking coffee 26 years ago b/c it made me jittery, tense, obnoxious and completely derailed my spiritual life. I’m encouraged to hear about your experiences using very pure beans and the bulletproof recipe. I love the taste of coffee but wasn’t willing to “pay the price” for drinking it. I am a primal/paleo believer and I’m thrilled to know about Paleo 2.0!

I’m in the Bay Area too. How long does shipping take?

I have tremendous appreciation for your dedication to your upgrading yourself and sharing the results with others as it dovetails beautifully with my own dedication to upgrading myself and sharing the opportunities with others. Is there any other reason, apart from personal taste, not to use salted grass fed butter? I have tried it with both just out of curiosity and i actually prefer salted kerrygold in my coffee.

    • Dave Asprey

Yes. The unsalted Kerry Gold is cultured; the salted is not. More culture = more butyrate!

Hey – I live in Switzerland and as Switzerland is pretty protectionist about agriculturual products it is impossible to buy any strictly grass-fed butter here. Shoud I stick to cockonut oil/milk, olive oil and the other things on your list or is butter still an option ?

I know you mention xylitol is ok in the coffee, but you don’t mention stevia. I know stevia is green on the bulletproof diet, but does it ruin the ketosis? I’m having a hard time with the bitterness of the coffee without some sweetener.

Stevia is just fine if you like the taste!

Thanks so much for this! My late husband loved coffee, and so do I (too a lesser extent). Since I am the only one left for my kids I really want to live. And this breakfast sounds not only healthy but enjoyable! I discovered low carbing just this feb. which has made me so much more present (I gained 2 hours a day in being awake) but I feel also adds to longevity. It doesn’t seem so expensive when it replaces what used to be Kashi cereal and vanilla soy milk too me :) I feel like the 65% carb diet suggested by the govt. is really bad, and my family learned the hard way. However I lost 3 BMI points in 2 months from an already healthy 24.7 with no effort and food I love.

I already use (salted) butter in cooking, so I’ll stop that. And just get this good butter for coffee

I also save my bacon grease it saves $ in cooking oils. so Ill use that if I need a salted fat. (Grilling chicken, yum)

Thanks, this should help my college studies as well (I’m 26 in college) A tastier cram session methinks.

Hey there! Love the taste of the upgraded coffee prepared according to this recipe, and love the energy boost from the MCT oil.

For a female wishing to drop those last 10 lbs or so, would you still recomend these amounts and ratios of oils, or perhaps go a bit easier on the butter portion of the recipe?
Thanks for any clarification and suggestions!

You want Ox Bile, not Betaine HCl for the butter. Ox Bile is for fats and Betaine HCl is for proteins. Awesome idea though. I will try.

Just a quick question regarding source of coffee. For now I am not able to order online your awesome coffee, but have found a brand called Magic Volcano. It is single source and hand picked beans. They aren’t wash pressed (sun dried), but so far I haven’t had head ache, jitters or any bad GI problems….so is still OK in the meantime? Btw, it DOES taste very good with no gross aftertaste.

p.s. I tested some Nestcafe instant coffee and I wanted to ‘test’ any bad effects. Wow…after over a month of no diarrhea problem…guess what…yup! I felt so crappy for that whole day and even on into the next day…WOW!

Thanks for all your good work!

    • Dave Asprey

Natural process (sun dried) is usually higher toxin than washed, but if you feel good, that’s what matters most.

  • m. bouvier

    dave,

i was wondering what your take would be on tweaking the recipe by subing coconut oil for MCT oil? you’d still be getting those quick burning MCT’s right? but with the added benefit of lauric acid. i’ve been putting a tbsp of coconut oil in my coffee in he mornings for the last year but i really think kerrygold is the power packed ingrediant here, and is what really keeps the hunger at bay (making you feel bulletproof) but what’s your take on coconut oil vs. straight MCT oil?

    • Dave Asprey

You can use coconut oil without harm, but you need to take 6 tablespoons of coconut oil to equal one of the MCT I recommend. They are not the same thing!

      • Fred

So 6 tablespoons of coconut oil == 30 g of MCT as per the recipe?

        • Dave Asprey

No; to equal my Mct dose you need 6x what I use, or 180 grams of coconut oil, which is somewhere close to 6Tbs I think.
You will probably poop on yourself if you eat that much coconut oil and butter at once. ;)

It might be a coincidence, but it might have helped me play the best golf of my life. I didn’t make this connection until I was looking at your site today. I am in a golf league that plays 9 holes on Wed. In the past three years, I am usually around 50. Yesterday shot a 42 and pared 6 out of 9, and two bogeys. It was by far the best round of my life.

Also, is it cool to just eat a ton of Kerry Gold? I’ve been making 3 scrambled eggs in about 4tbsp butter, which works really well. The butter is soaked up in the eggs and they are incredible with sea salt. How much is too much though?

Hi! I was just wondering what your thoughts on Philz brand coffee beans are? I’ve been a big fan ever since I’ve had my first cup and generally can’t stand the other stuff now anyway (not that I’ve tried your brand yet). Thanks! :)

P.S. I have just made a cup of it in the French Press and did the grass-fed butter w/ a scoop of Stevia and am really enjoying this cup right now. Looking forward to easing myself into this lifestyle!

    • Dave Asprey

I have had Philz and know Phil is a stand-up guy. Their coffee tastes good…but it’s all blended. Blends dramatically increase the odds that some less than stellar (and clean/mold free) beans are in your cup. Single-estate will always lower your risks. So I count Philz as “people who care about quality coffee and are good for the community” but not in the “people who produce scrupulously clean low mycotoxin coffee” bucket. I don’t drink it because it gives me a headache. Your mileage may vary. ?

  • Paul Hampton

    Hi Dave

Bought myself an awesome bean-to-cup coffee machine and had my first Bulletproof coffee yesterday using some of your recommended coffee beans, MCT oil and some raw biodynamic grass-fed butter from my local farm shop (UK).

I actually noticed a marked improvement in my cognitive function – I wasn’t expecting such a definitive effect – certainly not after one cup!

My question – I drank the coffee at 9am, and didn’t feel hungry for about six hours afterwards. That was despite a 90 minute heavy weight training session and a run! Do you also experience such a long feeling of satiety after drinking bulletproof coffee? If so, do you just make yourself eat or actually wait until you are hungry?

    Thanks for your help bud.

Dave, I have purchased and consumed several bottles of the MCT oil you recommend but wonder why your preferred brand is so much more expensive than the NOW brand. I see no difference in the labeling. Second question: I would like to make your coffee using a Moka (the tiny coffee maker than Italians use—just add water and espresso grind). Will I lose any benefits? I hate to have to buy yet another coffee maker, ala, a french press.

    Many thanks for responding!

    • Dave Asprey

      Your coffee maker is fine!

The MCT we recommend is pharmaceutical grade and a different density than the cheap stuff. Some brands use a mix of the 4 lengths of MCT oils, but the one we recommend is almost 100% the C8, C10 lengths (capric and caprylic) that are most important.

It’s thick, has the consistency of say peanutbutter or something. Heavy. I tried it in the coffee and absolutely loved it. Do u think this would be an acceptable substitute for the butter? Nutritionaly similar? Since it’s raw and grass fed would the denatured cassein proteins you speak about in the post still be an issue? Would love your input. Thanks for putting me on to this!

    Dear Bulletproof Executive,

Greetings! I am the Sonic Dreamer, and one of the things I am is a musician. I noticed a *marked* improvement in my creativity as well as my ability to sightread a piece on the piano (sightreading means sitting down and playing a piece of music, which you have never seen before) after drinking my very first cup of coffee with nearly 3 tablespoons of Kerrygold unsalted butter. Thank you for making me a believer! I have ordered the MCT oil, and will begin adding that as well.
I have a few questions for you:

    1. Is there a difference (benefits, etc) to how fine the coffee beans are ground? Is there a threshold where benefits begin to decrease, for example?

    2. I can not find any definitive proof as to which is better overall: Paper filters or mesh filters. As for taste, paper wins handily. Would you explain the ‘hacking’ benefits of non-disposable filters?

    3. I have yet to find a different brand of grass-fed, unsalted butter here in New Haven, CT. Have you tried (or even heard of) any other brands?

    Thanks!

  • GFox

    Hi Team BPE. Few questions:
    1. Can I just get a definitive answer on this, please: If I am not a coffee drinker at all but a green tea drinker is the recommendation that I actually start drinking this super-duper coffee? I’m game if that is the case.
    2. I take it MCT oil can be kept in the fridge and will not solidify?
    3. Is Anchor butter really a reasonable second choice to Kerry Gold? It is so widely available an “commercial” I guess that would surprise me.
    4. Would ghee from grass-fed butter always be preferable to just grass-fed butter?
    5. Been 95% Paleo for two years.I have increased my butter intake to about a third of a stick a day in the last two weeks. I think I have gotten a bit less lean. Is it possible that some people have to be more active in order to drink butter without adverse effects on body fat %?

    Many thanks,

I’m getting confused with all these comments to such a short and (with respect) un-detailed article. From some of the comments I read, there seems to be a ‘pack’ that can be purchased (the ‘right’ coffee & other ingredients to make this BulletProof Coffee).. but where is the link to buy the stuff? Also, is this a ‘weight loss’ method? There seems to also be some confusion as to what EXACTLY this BulletProof Coffee is supposed to be for?

I’m confused. Please write another article with more details about this idea. IE: Why it is ‘good’; Is it for weight loss?; What are the exact ingredients and the amount to be used daily?; Where (online or off) can I purchase the ingredients; and so on..

Thank you – I need more clarification and details on this interesting yet confusing theory. PS: I’d like to lose or maintain weigh and to build muscle tone. Is this for me or not?

Also, from what I’ve read (I’ve read this entire page) – it seems this is complicated and gets more complicated when reading all the comments.

    Thanks for any help.

It *can* be a weight loss method depending on your body. I’ve lost a good 15 lbs on it. It does this mainly by inducing ketosis in your body by reducing the amount of carbohydrates you ingest during the day. Also, by eating a large volume of fats the glycemic load of the foods you eat (e.g. how much they spike your blood glucose and thereby your insulin which directly affects your body’s fat storage) is greatly reduced, thereby significantly helping weight loss efforts. Also, high fat diets have been shown to be muscle protectants, so you shouldn’t be losing muscle mass, especially if you are also lifting heavy.

It *is* complicated, and it does get even more so with the increase in knowledge. It’s complicated because metabolism is complicated and largely unknown. It’s also complicated because not all bodies have the same metabolism. Some do incredibly well on high fat, others need more carbs, or more protein. There are allergies to contend with, and various levels of intolerance. The best thing you can do is figure out what *your* body needs, but the BP diet is a great place to start, a great platform to build off of, IMHO, as the science is sound.

I’ve been doing something similar for a while but I’m wondering why with all this natural stuff you prefer “’MCT oil”. Why not use the natural product virgin coconut oil? MCT oil has been put through a fractionation machine which breaks apart the naturally occuring molecule and reassembles it in a different configuration. Bad idea.

Pure, natural coconut oil is much better in my book.

I think the only reason they did the fractionation in the first place was based on a mis-guided fear of saturated fats so they wanted to isolate only some components of the original coconut oil.

Coconut oil is an amazing product of nature and doesn’t need any “help”!

I started Paleo last summer. About 80/20 but working on it. I am beginning to FEEL bullet proof. I have No more hot flashes. I Heal from a cut in minutes it seems. Never run out of energy. I am doing things I thought I’d never do again. Just amazing…I am 57, soon to be 58 and feel healthier than when I was 30.

    • Joey

Lynn I’m so excited for you. This stuff does work. I am only 40 and began having daily wicked hot flashes about every 45 minutes this past June. Just hit me like a brick. I almost cried! I’m too young for this! I’m only 40!… I immediately drew upon what I knew and went back to gluten free and sugar free. A little while later I found this site and with the confirmation of all the amazing info here started back with the paleo and going real heavy on the kerrygold and coconut oil. The hot flashes immediately started weaning down and now I just noticed yesterday that I haven’t had one in like two and a half weeks. I totally attribute it to those fats. In another funny story, I used to wait tables while finishing my degree and I waited on this couple one day who both looked about 50 years old. They had a little 2 year old with them in a highchair. I innocently ( but dumbly) asked, ” oh do you guys have your grandson for the weekend?!” To which they replied very graciously with smiles (sure they got asked that a lot) “He’s ours!” I felt sheepish and embarrassed but had to ask… She said ” We tried for years to conceive and finally just gave up, a couple years ago for unrelated reasons, I went on the Atkins diet and I turned up pregnant 6 months later! This lady swore it was all the proteins and fats, which for years she never let herself have, that balanced her hormones and enhanced her fertility. was a really cool story! Finally, just have to add, noticeable increase in spontaneous language and decreased anxiety in my autistic daughter as well. Oh yah, we’re kickin’ autism’s ass BP style LOL!

      • Ubergail

Joey I would love to know how the bulletproof techniques are helping your daughter. My son is 5 and is autistic and I think this could help him, but I am trying it all on myself first.

      • bob

Nice. Do you also ask overweight women if they’re pregnant?

      • ashleyroz

Neat! I got pregant with my son after a year of trying with just 6 weeks on atkins. It was amazing. I had seriously just stopped trying.

  • Lynn

I’m off to get the unsalted Kerrygold NOW. Is Kona beans from Hawaii good enough?

  • http://www.garmaonhealth.com/ Joe

Dave, you’ve thrown a wrench into my belief system.

I’m a health blogger and life-long health nut.

My view is that though there are some benefits to coconut oil, and given that it’s far better than long-chain fatty acids, it, like all saturated fats should be eaten in moderation.

Moreover, I extoll the benefits of trying to get all three macronutrients into every meal, the proportions being specific to the individual, but that the proteins be lean, the carbs low glycemic and the fats primarily omega-3 fatty acids.

And now I must scratch my head over your butter-coconut-coffee for breakfast.

I get your point of view on the matter and the fat-reducing experiences of you and many of your readers. But I wonder if, at best, it’s a short-term process for fat reduction (assuming, on average, it does that), rather than a prescription for a lifelong diet.

Dr. Ornish has expressed his disfavor of your characterization of his diet, one nearly opposite of yours, in Comments elsewhere on this site. In 2008 The Lancet Oncology had his diet reviewed: http://www.ergo-log.com/epicatechin-from-cocoa-extends-life-expectancy.html

The results were all favorable re reduction of cholesterol, waistlines, fat, and increases in mental alertness and the like. More interesting, however, was that the telomerase activity in the men’s blood cells increased by almost 30 percent!

As you know, this is an indication of improved longevity outcomes.

So, yes, I realize you are a prime example that this diet works, but two questions:

    1. To what extent does your supplementation (testosterone, etc.) contribute to your leanness?

    2. Assuming the Bulletproof Diet does reduce fat for most that try it, should these people not switch to something more akin to the Ornish diet for long-term health?

Thanks for any input you care to present.

    -Joe

P.S. I’ve been experimenting w/ the coffee/coconut but can’t bring myself to add the butter. Yes, I’m not hungry till the 1:00 or so, but haven’t been feeling as good as usual. I do add about 30 grams of no-carb protein powder to the mix, within 1/2 hr of arising, per Tim Ferriss’ recommendation.

P.P.S. The one thing I have trouble accepting re Ornish’s diet is all that soy. Soy worries me. It’s that estrogen thing.

    • Dave Asprey

Joe, omega 3 oils unsaturated – they oxidize. You need stable oils to make your cell membranes. Your body can only manufacture one fatty acid from scratch – palimitic (saturated) acid. We are built to run on saturated fats, with enough omega 3 to keep our membranes flexible, and very little omega 6. That’s why eating 50% of your fat as saturated fat is a good idea.
I’ve kept my weight off for more than a decade. It’s not short term. It’s a lifestyle.
As for the Ornish studies, where do they compare grass-fed low toxin vs Ornish junk food? It’s never done. Industrial factory meat is bad for you and I’d rather starve slowly on the Ornish diet than poison myself quickly with industrial foods…but optimal is another game entirely. There are no studies of telomere length from people who eat Bulletproof, or even Paleo, so we go on other markers (blood tests) and quality of life, and biochemical understanding. It works.
The testo is a non-issue. I take a small replacement dose because after my multiple toxin exposures and previous obesity (on an Ornish-ish type lower fat diet I might add), I don’t make much testo. I can influence it up using diet and exercise, but not to where it should be. So I monitor my blood level, and it’s in the middle of the curve for a man my age. No unfair advantage there.
The BP Diet is not a fat reduction diet. It is a high performance, maximum brain enhancing, low toxin, high energy, anti-aging diet meant to sustain health for very long periods of time. It just happens to make fat fall off too. ?
Thanks for the good questions Joe!

  • Joey

Dave, how do you get the butter/oil into your kids? I have an autistic child that desperately need it but obviously wont do coffee and is gluten free so putting it on toast etc. is not an option. would a sweet potato loaded with butter and cinnamon for breakfast be ok? also, what do you think about all the gf breads/baked goods etc on the market? bad idea?

    • Zorica

Of course I’m not Dave, however I would like to give my opinions based on my exposure to other comments made by Dave and Armi on this blog.

Yes, the sweet potatoe idea is AWESOME for your child. Also, don’t be afraid of the coffee (low toxin of course) for your child. Armi stated that there’s really no evidence that coffee is bad for kids. Many cultures do this already and it’s sometimes more diluted than adult version. For example, 1/3 coffee, with 2/3 cream (hopefully raw from grass fed cows). You could use coconut milk too with this beverage and extra butter and coconut oil and MCT. Also, putting good quality cocoa powder in it with some raw cane sugar (or cocnut sugar). Might add a nice sweetness, but if not use the Xylotol or erythritol that Dave uses often. (When I was a kid I always took sips from my grandfather’s coffee.) It doesn’t stunt growth (maybe bad coffee does?)

The gf baked goods would not be bulletproof. I would not buy them or encourage eating them. You could make your own sweets and treats using coconut flour etc. as well as Get Some Ice Cream (don’t think it’s just for adult ‘get some’). There’s also the BP cupcakes that Dave makes with his kids too. At a friends’ b-day party if you’re stuck and they only serve crap (but at least gluten free) I guess don’t panic, but don’t use at your own house.

Hope this was helpful until Dave chimes in. :-)

      • Dave Asprey

Zorica, you nailed it! Thank you.

      • Joey

Thank you Zorica! I wonder if the bulletproof coffee sweetened up and with a little of daves cocoa would prove to be a good safe and effective stimulant alternative to adhd meds for those kids meanwhile providing the necessary fats for proper brain function….. I’m going to give it a whirl with mine and see how she fares.

i don’t know if dave would approve (but, i’d love to hear his take on it) of this but i make “hot chocolate for my son, 3 years old. consisting on about 2 tbsp of raw cacao powder, a few drops of stevia and 2 tbsp of unsalted kerrygold then pour hot water over it and blend… you may have to adjust how much stevia you use, as some brands are sweeter than others and you’ll have to find just the right mixture to overpower the bitter raw cacao but my boy loves his “hot chocolate” he calls it, “coffee” because i make it relatively the same way, with the blending and all and calling it coffee lets him feel like a big guy so, i go along with it…good luck!

      • Dave Asprey

As long as the chocolate is low-toxin, not only do I approve, I give it to my kids too! ? (note: Bulletproof Upgraded Chocolate Powder is days away from shipping…)

    • Dave Asprey

The GF premade goods for autistic kids are usually going to cause major problems, sadly. Lots of chemicals and bizarre things. The sweet potato would work, but you need more protein in the morning, and carbs later in the day. Mine do smoked salmon, eggs, bacon, avocado, coconut, and leftover meat from dinner in the mornings. Butter is a garnish on nearly everything; they love it. You may need to use ghee though because of autism casein probs. Blending it into soups is a good idea too.

    • Luluweezie

For what it’s worth, I make coconut milk smoothies for my kids, and if I feel they’re not getting enough fat during the day, I add melted coconut oil or melted butter into the blender along with the coconut milk, frozen banana, and berries. Cocoa sometimes, and raw honey or maple syrup or stevia.

I keep mushrooms and protein powder separate from my hot, usually coffee beverage.. There’s room in my life for more than one beverage. This am eg am coffee /cocoa beverage and a berries/protein/beverage and an egg/veges/left over salmon. . have I know what I should have playing as tunes now, lol- if only the nexus could double time while I do this.

So the additions I commonly fancy and used today: coffee cocoa, ginger, cayenne, maca, astragalus (different if ‘stir baked’ or raw and this am I used some of each, stir baked and then the veges and then the eggs, all in one), stevia and vanilla and cardamom optional, vitamin c somewhere. For reshi or agaricus blazi or changa or similar mixture, I use the Dragonherbs capsules or tincture. I get inspired by the spirit of jamu, that is the Indonesian word for this kind of “Food Medicine” that is used everyday and eaten, and can be bought from the street seller of jamu. This let’s me draw from whatever tradition.

Hello, a Swedish nutritionist and famous low-carber claims that drinking your coffee leads to leptine resistance (or at least affects one’s leptin negative). She claims that eating more than 70 grams of fat in one meal does that, since it’s not natural for humans (she argues).
What is your comment to this?

    • cogrick2

Seventy grams of fat is an an enormous amount. I doubt Bulletproof Coffee has nearly that much.

      • Anne

        I quote the recipe:
“Add 2 Tbs (or more, I prefer 80 grams, about 2/3 of a standard stick of butter) of Kerry Gold or other UNSALTED grass-fed butter
Add 30 grams of MCT oil for max energy, weight loss and brain function (optional if you have none)”80 grams + 30 grams = 110 grams :)

        • variable

You quote correctly, but add incorrectly. Butter is only about 80% fat, so the total of Dave’s recipe would be, in fact, much closer to this phantom nutritionist’s claim

        • Dave Asprey

          K.G. butter is 84% fat. ;)

        • Dave Asprey

Surprised no-one addressed your issue. Dave recommends eating starchy carbs one or two times a week to replete Leptin and growth hormone levels. The Bulletproof diet is generally low-carb, but it’s not Atkins. It’s a cyclical ketogenic diet, where you come out of ketoses once or twice a week.

    • marcio

Has she ever heard of Inuit?

    • Gladina Vuletic

Right now I don’t care about some Swedish nutiritionist nor do I care about some Inuit.

I am running into problems with my brain and I need the extra fat, but mainly from coconut oil and MCT. If it ‘ruins’ my leptin so be it. (which id doesn’t).

I drink too much coffee though considering my brain needs right now…sigh. Some things are hard to give up.

I take a lot of Mg though which has helped also in a tremendous way. I’ve also started taking d-ribose which I actually feel a benefit from. (Not just b/c I paid a lot and hope for good result b/c I’ve spent on other supplements and didn’t really experience the benefits they spoke of).

You are correct about the butter optimizing cholesterol levels. My wife and I only eat real butter, and we only use coconut oil as our cooking oil. I grill pork a lot, eat fried eggs all the time, etc. We recently had complete blood work done as a routine physical, and our cholesterol was, to quote my doctor “perfect”. Just got my upgraded coffee, ran to the local Whole Foods and picked up some Kerry Butter—- I used my french press, about 1/4 slice of butter- awesome!!!!! Tried it twice. Once with a little brown sugar, didn’t do it for me, actually tasted strange. Then tried it again, butter in cup, poured hot coffee over it, no sugar, whipped it. Perfect. The only sugar I ever really took was in my coffee. I think I am done with table sugar for good. And the coffee beans didn’t have that slightly strong scent that oily beans usually have. The beans have an subtle and almost sweet and thick aroma. Do these coffee makers spike those beans to give them strong scent?
Dave, thanks!! An awesomely simple, but effective biohack.

        • WestEnd

I think you have misunderstood. I suggest thast you go back to reread Dave’s reply again. AND != OR

In addition, lactose is in the whey fraction which is removed from the milk as butter is made. It is in the comments too, somewhere. Clarified butter removes any residual milk proteins and sugars (lactose) from the butter. Some clarified butter is called ghee which is a word from India.

I have read that organic raw unpasturized milk is not a problem for the lactose sensitive. Somehow the processing changes the chemistry of other milk. So that’s a second way tho go.

Please do not attempt to manage your atrial fibrillation with acupuncture. Judy, when Debb ends up with a stroke because she threw a clot into her brain from her heart after deciding to stop taking medication and use acupuncture, the blood will be on your hands. Please don’t offer medical advice over the internet.

I don’t see anywhere in that above post that recommended to stop taking medication in lieu of accupuncture, why the “river runs red with blood” dramatics?

        • Judy

Thank you Mike. I continue to take my medication, and would not recommend anyone stop taking their’s either. I have just found that it is a helpful tool. If the Young Physician does some research, she/he might find that their was a study done in Italy that showed a significant decrease in incidence of a.fib through the use of accupuncture.

Hey all, only on my second day of bullet proof coffee and I understand why so many have become die-hard so quickly.
It really seems to be the real deal.
Any thoughts on a vegan alternative to the butter?
I was wondering about something like hemp butter?
Would that be a close second?

    • Dave Asprey

Vegan hemp harvesting kills more lives than grass fed ghee from small farms! There is no ethical or health reason not to use handcrafted butter in it. Coconut oil is closest (try canned coconut milk/cream) but you will miss the CLA and the SCFA in butter that make it work! Hemp oil is high omega6 and not recommended.

Have been drinking coffee this way now for the last 4 months. For the last 30+ years my hands have been so dry that at times they crack and bleed. I have tried countless creams and lotions. I have slept with gloves on with lotions, etc. Rx medicines from medics, all to no avail. I have done multiple body detoxes and cleanses, changed my diet, etc. After only month of drinking the bullet proof coffee, my hands are no longer dry and no longer crack! I combine the Kerry Gold butter with organic coconut oil and drink 2 cups a day like this. Thanks for this nutrition tip.My skin loves it !!! :)

    Dave,

Starting bulletproof coffee tomorrow. I figure that per two cup serving with 2 tbsp of Kerry Gold butter and 2 tbsp of coconut oil, there are 420 calories. How much BP coffee is too much? I was thinking two cups in the morning and two at night because I won’t be eating more than 1-2 servings of meat per day and wanna be eating enough calories.

  • http://twitter.com/Vmabuck Azbuck

Just polished off my first batch of Bulletproof coffee. The taste is damn good. I used a lot of coconut oil for the MCT and the toasted coconut flavor is awesome. I am thinking a little cardamom might be good? How does that rate for spices on your food chart?

Also, I would love to buy your coffee beans but $18 per 1lb bag is not really in my budget. Can we say that any bean, grown in high altitude in Guatemala, that is wet processed in a clean facility will suffice for mycotoxin free beans?

Where do Kona beans fit into all of this?

Thanks for all of your work man. I am buzzing all over. This is the real deal!

Dudes, unpasteurised every time! More of the natural biologicals in it, great for GI health

Putting anything unpasteurized in steaming hot coffee will probably pasteurize it since boiling water/coffee is 212F and pasteurization only goes up to about 170F.

Apparently it is illegal to sell unpasteurized dairy in Canada :(

      • marshal

Sadly, this is the case. One way around this is to look for a local cow share — you own a portion of the cow and pay the farmer to raise, milk, and deliver to you. So technically, you are not buying the raw milk. I live in Toronto, Canada and there are several cow shares nearby.

This also applies to butter; it has to be made from commercially pasteurized cream before it can be sold in Canada. Fortunately, in nearby Kensington Market, I can buy freshly made butter from grass-fed cows at Mendel’s Creamery (still pasteurized though).

  • Fred

Dave, what’s your thoughts about using a a tablespoon of sunflower or soy lecithin in the coffee mix?

I find that I have to shake or stir it between sips to keep the oils in suspension. With an emulsifier such as lecithin the oil and coffee should stay in suspension.

BTW, lecithin has 1g of carbs/TBSP and lecithin is in about everything we eat, pretty much like HFCS.

    Thanks.

    • Dave Asprey

Only do this if you’re drinking lukewarm or chilled; hot coffee oxidizes it (esp blended) and is not a good practice.

Ive really been enjoying the Nutiva C. oil in my coffee (about 2 tbsp) with a bit of sweat-leef pure stevia drops…My brain fog dissapears much more than with my organic coffee alone…what specifically would adding butter change? Note (bad genetics but good insulin health and average less than 80-90g carbohydrate each day…around 10-11%bf)

    • Dave Asprey

Butter has butyric acid that coconut doesn’t. Coconut is 15% MCT (useful MCT’s anyway) so it’s a good thing too.

      • Alex

Well, I’m beginning my “fasts” using just the C. oil for now, about 4tbsp, hoping I can see similar results to actual fasting until noon or 1 (was using a leangains style protocol) but without the brainfog I experienced occasionally with coffee alone. Thank you kindly, and I am enjoying the podcast as well sir.

    Dear Dave,

We’ve been trying bulletproof coffee for two weeks now and cannot get enough of it!

So much in fact, that we wake up in the mornings looking forward to it in the same fashion you would wake up early on Christmas day for presents!

However my question is , sometimes later in the afternoon we start to feel sluggish and originally it was coffee that would get us through the day. The feeling after we get bulletproof is amazing and it would be great for that sluggish moment in the afternoon. So would increasing your daily intake of bulletproof coffee from 1 cup to two be too much? Or would it be best to keep such fat heavy drink only for the mornings?

And if so, any recommendations for that afternoon slump?

it was a joy to hear you on the Joe Rogan Experience! We’ve been sharing your work with all of our family and friends, and we look forward to incorporating more of your diet to our daily life!

    Thank you so much! :)

    -K

    • Dave

I think the most exciting part of my day is when I wake up and think, its time for Bulletproof Coffee!

      • Dalia

….so, do you recommend 2 cups in the morning??

        • http://twitter.com/8bitmore 8bitmore

You are not addressing “that” Dave but one of the many others. Also, no matter what one/several Dave’s would say about this I intuitively doubt that THAT much butter daily would be very healthy / maybe make 2 cups with half as butter in each? :)

        • Me

Definetely have another cup if you want. You may not want to in the later afternoon or evening as the caffeine might affect you sleep. The butter is not an issue though, you probably need to get in more healthy fats anyway. Dave says he goes through a stick of butter everyday, so you it in your coffee and drench your veggies in it too!

  • http://twitter.com/GetsomePhil PD

First attempt at the coffee and it’s damn delicious. I searched high and low and found some single origin k-cups for my Keurig….is that okay or am I getting shit coffee still?

  • mtvecchio

is it ok to just pour the brewed coffee onto the butter (melting it) instead of blending it all? when i get up really early in the morning all my housemates are sleeping so i dont want to wake them.

    • OlavDi

Blending is not necessary, but it will give you a foamy cup of coffee similar to a latte. Without blending, the butter doesn’t mix very well with the coffee. Instead, just use a whisk and beat it manually; it will give you the same result.

  • James Tripp

What is a good substitute for butter? I have an anaphlyactic milk protein allergy. Would coconut oil be good?

  • Zaid

Dave Asprey: There is a brand of “organic butter” sold by Costco at the moment that bears the following description. Does it meet your definition of suitable butter to vouchsafe the right fats?

–”The cows live outdoors all year-round, with 24-hour access to water, and are fed a nutritionally-balanced diet of organic pasture, organic mixed forages (such as alfalfa hay, grass hay and silages), organic grain (such as soymeal, ground corn, wheat, sunflower and flax seeds) and an organic vitamin and mineral supplement. They are not given any antibiotics or hormones.”

I anticipate that your answer is going to be “no”, but it seems significant that most of the butter I see in the health-food stores (like Rainbow Grocery in SF) say only “pasture-fed”, which does not exclude substances other than grass –so I’m a bit overwhelmed by the uncertainty at every turn. Any help?

    Hello Dave

Just made my first batch of BP coffee and I was pleasantly surprised. I feel great, I am full and have a ton of mental clarity. I do have one question though. I am in Canada so grass fed butter is impossible to find, so I have purchased some ghee to use. Is the ratio used the same? I ask because I thought the coffee was quite oily and separated constantly, I was stirring it like mad otherwise the ghee just floated to the top, which made for some hard to drink sips! I also used Nutiva coconut Oil as I am waiting for the MCT oil to ship.

On another note for Canadians, I contacted Nanak foods in BC and due to overwhelming demand they will have, as of the end of November, a purely grass-fed ghee. The company told me in recent months they had received a incredible amount of requests for the product. I can only assume it has to do with the growing popularity of BP coffee. Nanak products are available at Superstore as well as local Indian grocers.

Until Dave responds (I hope he does):

First, determine if plain coffee causes the same problem for you. Then if it does not and it’s only the BP style, then it might indicate you need some help with digestion, either stomach acids or further enzymes in the gall bladder for fats digestion. Either or, you can then further test to see the effects with digestive enzymes and/or betaine hcl.

      Hope this helps.

      • Dave Asprey

Zorica is right! Lipase and betaine HCL would be good. So would magnesium. I suspect you are still teaching your body to digest fats.

I ordered a few weeks ago and they are back ordered. I can’t last the week without coffee and Dunkin Donuts messes with me. I think that Dave is 100% correct with the mold issue.

I really need to buy some today. Thanks!

    • WestEnd

I read about Intelligencia coffee and that it fills the bill of mold free and single source. Your mileage of course may vary.

I heard that MCT oil reacted to heat the same way as omega 3, which would mean that putting it in hot coffee wouldn’t be a good idea… does anyone know if this is true or not?

  • matthiasak

So I haven’t ordered Upgraded Bulletproof Coffee yet, but I have had the opportunity to use Kerry Gold butter and some Coconut oil that is 65% MCTs. It’s wonderful!

And I have gotten some very awkward looks and conversations started when I make it. HAHA XD

From the autophagy and such last week, I’ve already dropped a few pounds, and my abs have tightened up without any exercise, my skin has cleared up, I’m sleeping heavily at night, and have been getting away with 6 hours of sleep a night!

I’ve also read Body by Science (great book!) and looked into CSAs in my area that provide 100% grass fed beef for cheaper alternatives to shopping at the grocery store / Whole Foods.

There is one question I have, regarding the quality of my coffee. I have been using an organic Guatemalan single-sourced whole bean from Central Market, however I read that the oils themselves still get released when the bean is brewed and may contain mold toxins attached. Well, what about cold brewing overnight? By brewing in cold water we keep more of the oils in the ground bean and I can then warm up the iced-toddy if I want to have a better ability to absorb the butter and coconut oil into the coffee. Theoretically this should make some badass bulletproof coffee.

    Is this a good process?

    • matthiasak

As a side note, I have been taking COLD showers before bed, and I have been able to fall asleep much faster than normal. Having some fat before bed (30ish minutes before) also seems to really help.

Hello, I just want to tell you that the upgraded coffee has changed my life! I am a crossfit and jiu jitsu athlete at Undisputed Fitness in Santa Fe New Mexico. The results have been explosive! I have more energy and some guys cannot keep up with my energy levels and I feel I owe it all to the coffee. I drink about six to eight cups a day and I recommend it to anybody that wants to feel Powerful throughout the day. I would like to try a few other of your products with my coffee. I am curious about your cacao and vanilla? Again just thought I would drop by and let you know how I feel. I always tell people about your website and so far my feedback has been GREAT! Thanks for all the great info on your site!

Hey Dave. Is it ok to have a minuscule amount of carbs in the coffee? I use erythritol, but I also add about 4g of coconut sugar for its great taste. The coconut sugar is low glycemic. Thanks!

    • Zorica Vuletic

Just want to remind everyone (which Dave probably does elsewhere). Make sure to have good Mg status (in cells and not blood test with only 1% of Mg showing in blood/serum). I discovered that drinking a lot of caffeine can deplete of Mg. Don’t bother give up the delicious coffee though (well you might want to for a short time while you replete your stores) but instead focus on getting good Mg either from loads of green veggies and/or supplementation. This is my strategy…we’ll see how it turns out. After two days of mg supplementation I am already noticing benefits. Hope it keeps up. I’m also switching to high green tea consumption for now too. Don’t worry I am not giving up coffee—HELL NO way that is happening (too delicious) but for now I need to help my mitochondria atm….store it with Mg.

Also for every 1 molecule of sugar (organic or not) it uses up 54 molecules of Mg. At least from what I read: wow! I was drinking too much coffee and using too much honey. I ran into trouble. So fixing that now…wish me luck.

How much coffee do you grind at once? How much is needed for your 500 ml each morning?

I have been using bulletproof tea for three weeks. I tried several brands in that time, but recommend Celestial Seasons. They have a wide variety of flavors and they seem to work the best for me (probably very low in Mycotoxins). Celestial Seasons is a common brand and cheaper than coffee by a longshot. However, I recommend you try out a couple of different brands and see which one or ones work best for you.

grain fed unsalted butter (no where near as good as grass fed), mct oil (optional), and tea. Find a brand that works for you. It should not make you sick or tired even if you dial up the dose and add an extra bag or two. you could blow 20$ have 6 brands of tea to try out, and still have just as many servings as 3/4 lb bag of upgraded coffee. Once you find out which one is best for you, you’ll actually save money over cheap coffee!

  • WestEnd

(@pospos asked about his situation in which the advice was to avoid caffeine because of insulin sensitivity.) I think the oil helps with stomach reactions, acidity, and with hypoglycemic reaction. I use my internal feelings as a guide. The oil makes a difference.
Test and trust your internal sensors but know that context, what foods are eaten near the same time, and time of day c
    affectsthat. Also exercise does too.

In relation to the insulin reaction, i have read that fiber mitigates sugar, eaten together. I read it in Michel Montignac’s books re diet.
Confession: I am only inspired by the Bulletproof recipe and moderate it. . I use a teaspoon of coconut oil in a cup of coffee, plus cinnamon, other spices, think Mexican chocolate spices. Occasionally cocoa.

Interestingly I have read that MCT oils, which is 2/3 of coconut oil, is literally a food for the brain. I had thought that only sugar was a a source of brain food.
I tried to find a local source of mold-free coffee and tried Intelligencia,at one of their stores, $$ too but no delivery. It was terrible. It gave me that over-hyped feeling I get from the wrong -usually I’d say cheap coffee. Not for me.

Disclaimer: Since I am female, and over 65, my body reactions might be different from yours. Someday I will get the nerve to ingest that much fat at once. Just to test.

Looks like Organic Meadows is about the closest you can get to grass fed butter in Canada (Superstore seems to stock it as well as most organic food stores). KerryGold is not allowed to export to Canada at this time.

Here’s the reply I got from Organic Meadows when I enquired about the butter…

“Being certified organic, they all must abide by the organic rules which include that the cows must eat primarily grass. Throughout the warm months this is more obvious since they are all out to pasture between approx. April and November eating what they graze. However, because we live in Canada and the grass is covered during the snowy winter months, eating only grass is not possible. What they are also given is alfalfa, peas, oats, soybeans, corn etc. During the summer months, in general, the cows are fed 95-100% grass because its readily available. Our farmers also collect the hay for storage to feed the cows during the winter months. During the winter months the amount of grass would be about 70-85% depending on the farm and the quality of the hay that they were able to bring in from their fields. All of their feed must be 100% certified organic, non GMO and must not contain any animal byproducts.”
Personally, if that’s the closest I can get to grass fed, then, I’ll take it.

    • Gladina Vuletic

When I’m not hemming and hawing about my tolerance for casein, I am very happy with Oganic Meadows. No it’s not 100% grass fed but I’ve compared with regular butters (since I was hoping to save $$ with regular butter) and you can taste (and feel) the difference.

Go ahead with the Organic Meadows if our country is going to be stupid with food laws. :insertranthere:

    • CT

Thanks for looking into this. I’ve been looking around for butter with grass fed on the label with no luck. I’ve seen Organic Meadow though. I had no idea that Canada doesn’t allow Kerrygold exports. What’s the reasoning behind that?

      • Zorica Vuletic

Reasoning: Although Canada is a great country, our import laws are just ridiculous. That’s the ‘reason’. haha There are many things which we cannot get even from online shopping. Organic Meadows does seem fine though and I am satisfied enough with this brand. :)

I made my first cup tonight with the unsalted butter, cacao butter, and chocolate powder. It’s pretty good. I’m curious though why it says 2 tbs of butter as 2/3 of a stick? There are 8 tbs in a stick. Himalayan salt is an excellent addition if you have a sore throat, it’s like gargling salt water plus it tastes great. Most coffee in the Navy has a pinch of salt added.

Will the coffee with that much fat interfere with intermittent fasting or paleo type eating?

  • MustBeSaid

Just buy some organic white tea silver needles and brew that. You get FAR more antioxidants than this coffee (twice as much as green tea and four times as much as black tea), much less caffeine (which is what makes people jittery, not “toxins”) and it doesn’t stain your teeth like this coffee will over time.

PLUS, you don’t get all the cholesterol that you do in coffee. Filtering your coffee will remove most of it but if you’re drinking espresso or drinks based on espresso, you’re getting quite a bit of artery clogging crap.

AND because of the much lower caffeine content, you can drink more of it throughout the day to get a low but steady amount of caffeine to give you energy without the spike and crash of higher caffeine drinks. It also means you can drink more of the potent antioxidants without worrying about being jittery.

I have an off topic question. Regarding allergies (as I see about people posting here for butter). Is it possible to ‘get rid’ of allergies if one uses magnesium and especially zinc? Zinc has to do with immune strength and growth. I wonder if it could be possible.

For example I think in my life time depending on health (and stress) I might be ‘allergic’ to something or not. I am not sure and I just have to test things as I go. But I would like to know if anyone ‘got over’ their allergies (also think of GAPS and how Dr. Campbell-McBride believes that with GAPS one’s gut can be restored and many allergies (and behaviours) can be restored.

I thought it would taste gross myself initially; however, I actually stayed open minded and TRIED it before knocking it.

With butter or coconut oil blended in, it actually tastes like a really amazing latte. It’s quite surprising.

Additionally, the time commitment to make a cup of this coffee is around 5 minutes. So I don’t know why you think it takes a long time, unless 5 minutes is a long time to you.

Cup of Coffee = 2 minutes to make (using an Aeropress)

Throw coffee into a blender, throw in tbsp of coconut oil, and blend = 1-2 minutes

      Total time = ~3-4 minutes

    Hello Dave,

    -10 degrees? Is that F or C?

And more importantly, should 4-500 mL be interpreted as 4 times 2 mugs, each 500 mL, or one mug, between 400 and 500 mL?

Where I live, a ‘cup’ of coffee, is served in the French tradition, about 6 fluid ounces or 180 mL, whereas a mug is about 12 fluid ounces, or 360 mL – neither of which is the half-pint ‘cup’ used for measurement.

Sorry if I’m being too semantic, I’ve got adegree in Engineering, I suspect a hint of Aspergers, and worst of all, I haven’t had my coffee yet today :P

(going to attempt quantity 1 @ 500 mL serving of coffee, with 2 tbs unsalted butter. If successful, I’ll add coconut oil next time.)

    Dave,

I love bulletproof coffee. I love coffee in general.
However, I’m concerned about how the caffeine will affect my adrenals over
    time.

I understand why you advocate the coconut oil and butter for
the brain. But can you more specifically address the coffee and caffeine
aspects? Yeah, coffee/caffeine makes me feel like superwoman. But is regular
consumption going to result in adrenal burnout?

I read the Better Baby Book. And I understand that caffeine
is to be avoided during pregnancy. So if it is not good for fetuses, explain
how caffeine might be good otherwise. I would love to hear you say that my
adrenals will be fine, but I really want to know the truth.

My first cup o’ Bulletproof Coffee

Shipping on my coffee and MCT Oil was lightning quick, thanks! My Hario V60 Pourover from Amazon arrived in the same shipment so that was a good sign. I was off on an adventure now. Hmm. How much coffee is 20 grams? Sent me to the internet … Oh wait, the handy instruction sheet says to just fill the included scoop to the ‘tippity top. Nice. Though the unbleached number 4 filters I bought looked right in the store, that no longer appears to be the case. I need pointier ones. The Hario calls for something called “mountain fold” … arrrrrgh? Just need to get this coffee in me, so I make it work … pre-moistening the filter like in the Vimeo demo. Now it’s time to pour, only I
have way less coffee than in the pouring tutorial, so this ain’t taking no three minutes. That’s for people making several cups that can afford the luxury of pouring quicker and a little sloppier. When you only have enough grounds for a single cup you have to pour a bit, let it seep through, pour again … let it seep. 10 minutes and counting. No coffee on my lips yet. By the time I’m done, most of the coffee is now room temperature and way too lukey to melt the Kerry Gold unsalted butter. I heap it in anyway plus a teaspoon of MCT for good measure. We’re doing this first cup up right! I don’t have a hand blender on me … don’t even know what one is. Neither did Bed Bath and Beyond. I resort to
just pouring the preparation into my blender. This appears to work great as the coffee starts to get nice and brown and actually looks good enough to drink. Only problem is, it’s more a frappacino at this point. So I pour it all into a saucepan to warm it up because we no speaka’ the microwave around here. Now …
twenty five minutes after I first embarked on this crazy journey, I am about to get my first taste of Bulletproof Coffee …. All I gotta say is … this better be a John Travolta at Jack Rabbit Slim’s like epiphany here, or I may wind up disappointed …

Alright … owwwwee … it’s still a little hot … I blow .. here we go … first taste goes down the throat …

BEST CUP OF COFFEE I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! Oh my god … so creamy … so tasty … exactly what I like. THANKS DAVE!

Now if I could just get this prep time down to under fifteen
    minutes …

  • Staci C

I just don’t want my body to start burning muscle. Am I way off base? Not too knowledgable about this stuff so be nice! :) I really appreciate your input.

Great bulletproof butter in NZ – Organic Times unsalted butter, grass fed, beautiful flavour, no hints of rancidity (guts me sourcing great butter then discovering the taste is not all there) http://www.urbanharvest.co.nz/producer/biofarm-products, also available through HuckleberryFarms Retail.
NZ equiv of Kerry Gold would be Mainland butter. Pesticides, hormones used etc

Can you describe for me how butter is supplementing the ratio of healthy fats that are exquisitely important for your theory to actually work? I ask because I was always under the impression that the nature of animal-derived fats promotes inflammation and the biochemical processes linked to heart disease and cancer.

Tried my first one this morning. I am worried about my heart with two tablespoons of organic grass fed butter and MCT oil floating around my veins! Psychologically we’re programmed to avoid that much fat from a young age aren’t we? But I will say that 2.5hrs later I do feel alert and zoned in. Can’t help feeling I might be a little hungry before lunch, but I look forward to sticking with it for a week or two to see if it makes a difference to weight and or energy levels.

Thank you so much for doing what you do. I discovered Bulletproof coffee just a month or so ago and I LOVE it. I have shared it with anyone who is interested and when I have the chance to make it for them, they love it. Even got my mom to try it and she loves it. I love being Bulletproof, my life rocks so much more now. Since starting the intermittent fasting, I’ve been losing “fat” effortlessly. I have been feeling for satiated and not hungry all the time. Hi Dave!

You’ve brought me out of coffee drinking retirement with this concept of bulletproof coffee. My biggest problem is I don’t seem to respond well to caffeine…or at least I think that’s what’s happening. I’m not at full on shakes, but there was some nausea today. Also, you mentioned you suffered from adrenal fatigue, and I have been repeatedly taught that step one in repairing the adrenals: cut the caffeine. How did you approach it? Are the mycotoxins et al largely contributors to the adrenal fatigue perhaps? And yes, adrenal fatigue is an issue.

    Thanks!!
    Frederick

    • Gladina Vuletic

Good news!! Dave has BP decaf coffee now! Woo hoo!! It’s Swiss water process, so it still ensures the same non-chemical and non-mycotoxin beans as his regular caffeinated coffee.

I start to learn slowly that yes, maybe caffeine is not the best for adrenals if one is compromised. Oooo well.

      Good luck Frederick!

      • http://www.facebook.com/schurger Frederick T Schurger Dc

I just saw that too! I’m going to try the caffeinated version first actually (should show up tomorrow). I’m wondering if the bulk of my problems with coffee over the years hasn’t been simply the mycotoxins in the first place. I’ve been using some organic coffee that I’ve had, and it’s seemed pretty good. I was travelling this weekend, and had the hotel do the blending of the butter and coconut oil. It was OK, but the coffee definitely didn’t make the grade.

      • http://www.facebook.com/schurger Frederick T Schurger Dc

I’ve been drinking the caffeinated Upgrade coffee with the MCT oils this week, and I’m finding I’m getting an upset stomach about an hour after finishing. I’m not getting the nausea that I used to have with standard coffee, but general discomfort that I have not experienced before with pretty much the same ingredients (hotel coffee all last week too). I’m thinking it’s the MCT oil or the upgraded Anti-aging supplement. Anyone else experience something similar to this? I’m figuring its most likely my body getting used to something different, but still disconcerting.

Thanks in advance for your thots/replies!
        Frederick

    Hi Dave,

Just listened to your call with Mark Divine, both you hosting and him hosting today on the 18th.

I started mixing your formula for the coffee and I ordered all your ingredients but just couldn’t wait to get started. So I started with Pete’s coffee, grassfed Ghee, and straight coconut oil. Day 1 was amazing, I could tell my body was craving it but I stuck to 1 dose per day. I am now on day 4 while I wait for all the bulletproof ingredients to arrive and I am noticing some changes.
    500ml of coffee per day

    1) I feel like after dosing with this for 4 days straight, 1x per day that my tank is full and I am not quite craving it as much. Is that a function of using “nonbulletproof coffee” or regular coconut oil as opposed to MCT oil?
    2) My girlfriend and I have both noticed appetite suppression, we are both very active lifters / crossfitters and I work very long hours at my job as well so my thought is that I am worried that I am getting sick if I am not hungry, but after your statement about physiology I am thinking that it is the fat intake. Your thoughts?
    3) Is there any negative reaction if we add cinnamon or other things to the coffee? My initial thought was that the cinnamon was acting as an appetite suppressor?

I can’t wait for the REAL STUFF to show up so I can be mycotoxin free in my coffee! I work in agriculture so I can appreciate the threat of such toxins in our own food supply. My goal is to change the food we eat (in a positive way).

    Thanks for your response!

    Hi Dave,
Dave, I received my order of your Upgraded Coffee and was so excited to start my new morning routine. I went out and bought a grinder and french press. I made it this morning for the first time, while it tasted good I have been nausea since then. I suspected it might be too much butter for my stomach so I took anti-refux meds and a couple Tums but that hasn’t help. I’m thinking of reducing the amount of grass-fed butter. How much do you recommend for a starting point.
    Thanks

    • Gladina Vuletic

Here’s some things to consider. 1 DON’T use ant-acids. Your stomach acid is probably too low instead of too high, therefore it tries to give acid but instead is misplaced into acid reflux. 2. To handle fat digestion you can try things like ox bile to help digest fat. 3. Just double check you do not have any dairy allergies and see if you get the same problem with just ghee. I find for me I need to be careful with the amount of butter I have otherwise it will be inflammatory for me. Hope this helps, and please stop using ant-acids unless you actually have evidence of a peptic ulcer that was actually caused by too much stomach acid.

Dave, I just want to say THANK YOU.

I had a friend who used to drink what he called “Ming Tea” (which makes sense to me now since the Ming dynasty was the Mongol ruled dynasty, and they are from the steps near Tibet) it was essentially what you described having found in Tibet. At the time I thought he was crazy for drinking so much butter, and I just assumed the reason he was thin and perky was genetic. After finding this post and being reminded of the Ming Tea claims my friend had made I decided to try your coffee recipe. All I can say is WHOAH! I feel like I could go ten rounds with Mike Tyson, or run a marathon, or just make it to work with a spring in my step. I am two weeks in and I don’t think I will ever stop.

Got some of your coffee on the way, and I can’t wait to see the difference between that and the stuff I am drinking.

I used to drink tons of coffee few years back – way beyond healthy limits I guess – I’ve quit for few years now I’m back but drink significantly less. There’s something about BP coffee that makes it taste great, just as a plain black french-press coffee.

BUT, I have also tried few times your recipe with MCT oil & butter, and I cannot do it. Simply can’t. To me, it’s disgusting. I tried both Kerrygold and Smjor butters, different amounts of it, … The effect is there (lots of energy and no hunger for many hours after the morning buttery coffee) but it’s an absolute pain to drink it. Any suggestions?

I am 38 and a total coffee rookie (when I go to a coffee shop I literally ask them for whatever they have that tastes closest to a choc shake, lol). Have never cared for typical coffee taste but decided to order the upgraded coffee, MCT, and anchor grass fed unsalted butter (found it on amazon) to do the recipe right.

BUT… how much of the actual coffee am I supposed to put into the coffee maker? I did take the beans and get them ground up, but I just have a standard 4 cup paper filter style coffee maker.

This morning I tried 1 tbsp coffee grinds, 4 cups water, 1 tsp mct, 2 tbsp butter and I thought it tasted pretty ‘weak’, but again I’m definitely not a coffee snob.

After lunch I tried 1 more tbsp coffee grinds, just 2 cups of water, 1 tsp mct, 2 tbsp butter and then blended in some ice in a ninja along with 1 tbsp choc powder (but want to try some choc whey powder – would that be ok?).

It was definitely stronger, but what is the typical coffee grind to water ratio?

I think I must be in the minority here, but I didn’t like butter in my coffee. Has anyone got any alternatives?

  • SeanHoskin

So I had been reading and listening to the podcasts after my former trainer introduced the material to me at a dinner one evening. This morning I took the plunge and made the coffee. Instantaneously, my body felt like it was on fire. I was alert, sweating and ready for my 4:00 am workout. At the gym I hit the workout with such intensity that my 3 hour plus usual efforts were accomplished in just under 2 hours. And I was innervated beyond belief still afterwards and not hungry! Amazing!

  • Jane

I just finished my first week and a half of bulletproof coffee.

I started with the full recipe, with the butter and the coconut oil. Then tried it with the vanilla and chocolate powders, and cinnamon. I also tried adding the cocoa butter on some days. I used Truvia as a sweetener.

Then, my partner wanted to try it too. So, he went for the full mix, and then also just for the coffee with half and half (gasp!). With just the half and half, no sweetener

    I’m 50 and he’s 53. We use a Vitamix. We each have 2-3 cups a morning.

So far here are my(our) results:

On its own, plain black, the Upgraded Bulletproof coffee we ordered is great tasting. I will continue to buy it. With just half and half it is also really tasty. No bitterness, no/low acid taste. Totally worth the money.

As for the recipe with all the added butter and oil, and/or with the powders, the coffee concoction definitely needs sweetener. I’m still trying to find/adjust the correct amounts of all the additives for taste. I think I added too much of the chocolate, didn’t like the cinnamon at all, and I can’t bring myself to add more than 3 tablespoons of the butter (for two cups).

After gamely trying what I prepared for him in the mornings, my partner prefers his coffee the old fashioned way, plain with half and half. I have to say, I prefer that taste as well, but, I will continue with the recipe provided with the butter. Why?

Well, my skin is SO much happier. All my life I’ve had extremely dry, and often itchy, skin. In the week and a half that I’ve been consuming the different variations of the coffee plus butter, my skin feels transformed. Can’t speak to the memory enhancement though.

I also tried Nuvigil for a week. I do suffer from excessive sleepiness, particularly in the car or at a desk, but this stuff didn’t help me. Didn’t help with concentration either. It did completely erase all appetite, which was very strange for me because I’m a hearty eater. I have stopped taking it because I don’t like the way it made me feel: it was like I was physically anxious, but not emotionally anxious, if that makes any sense at all.

I ground them myself, made the coffee, added 1 tablespoon of organic Yeo Valley butter, and one tablespoon of Biona coconut oil.

It wasn’t the best tasting thing in the world. So much so I couldn’t stomach a whole cup of it. Any recommendations on improving the taste? Does MCT oil have a taste? The coconut oil was overpowering, so that might have been the problem for me.

Coffee is not paleo approved. It’s a BEAN, yo. Beans are not part of the paleo diet. Even, ‘clean’ coffee beans (no such thing) contain toxins naturally as part of their defence against their natural predators; birds, bugs. If you are on the paleo diet because of health reasons and you find you are still having symptoms, ditch the coffee!

I don’t think Dave claims to be paleo. He might say ‘upgraded paleo’ or something like that, only to reference and to attract paleo audience. But by saying ‘upgraded’ that there implies it’s not paleo, but ‘upgraded’ which means to include ‘clean coffee’. LOL I find the whole paleo thing quite ridiculous. Dave might eat a certain way which he finds works for him and if it happens to share attributes to paleo, then so be it. I find it ridiculous to see what our ancestors ate and apply that to modern times: we are so damaged from generations of pollution and transgenerational epi-genetic effects that sometimes what works for cave man doesn’t necessarily work and/or is simply not enough for the people we are today.

I also point out again that by looking at the traditional societies left today; you still see such variation in diet. And even these people are influenced by overall changes in environment and what is available.. For example, some cultures eat loads of beans (and thrive) but these same people did not eat them when they first started out. Soy (it’s garbage for me and I don’t eat soy with a 10 ft pole) is eaten by many people without ill effect etc. But these same people eating soy did not eat it thoursands of years ago, but only discovered eating it out of starvation circumstances. And so on and so forth. in other words, I do like to look at the corner cases and theorize how things would and would not be for past and present peoples etc.

But please, don’t go on about coffee not being paleo. There’s plenty of other, better arguments to avoid coffee (for some people).

      LOL
