logo for SCD Lifestyle BlogLast week I was a guest of The Specific Carbohydrate Blog, from Jordan Reasoner and  Steve Wright.  They are two guys that made remarkable recoveries from Celiac and IBS, and are helping others do the same.  They have a lot of great information about improving digestive health.

They invited me on their show to talk about Bulletproofing your gut.  In this interview, Steve and I talk about:

  • Coffee, red meat and saturated fat
  • Epigenetics and the importance of genetics in general
  • Mycotoxins and the impact on autoimmune/gut diseases
  • Charcoal and your digestive system
  • Fresh fish and histamine, how to protect yourself
  • Sub-clinical food reactions
  • Using the emWave to help with stress and gut issues
  • How to keep the wrong foods out of your mouth
You can download the link from their website, here.

What improvements have you noticed since you changed your diet?   What do you think the one change that helped the most was?   How do you keep the wrong foods out of your mouth?

One interesting thing I found is that my mood and patience is much more regular than when I ate mostly moldy grains. Of course, cognitive function improved greatly, but I was pretty bad off there. I expected that. The mood thing was something unexpected.

    • Dave Asprey

Same for me. Mold makes me bitchy and cranky to be honest. ;)

Dave, you mentioned on this show that certain strains of probiotics caused cancer and you would post them to your site. Did you ever list these anywhere?

  • JT

Hey Dave, I’ve had Crohn’s since the age of two and have had a heavy dose for several years on and off of Prednisolone which has now resulted in me developing osteoporosis. I no longer take the drug, and was recommended by my doctor to take Bisphosphonate to get rid of the osteo. What are you suggestions?

    • Glen

Waiting to see what Dave says, but adequate D3, K2 MK-4 (menatetrenone), and an easily absorbable magnesium such as magnesium glycinate may be helpful against bone loss. Interestingly, excess vitamin A and E are suspected by some to cause excessive bone digestion through remodeling. Wish I knew how much A and E are too much.

Doesn’t taking Biphosphonate increase the risk for esophogeal cancer and and some other nasty side effects?

      • JT

Thanks for that Glen. My Vit D was super low at 23 units a month ago…I’ve started taking Vit D3 and after 3 weeks and now my vit D levels are at 66 units. I will definitely look into those suggestions you’ve made…I would like to stay away from Bisphoshonate at all cost.

@Jt – I’d agree with Glen, Sean @ underground wellness has done some shows on the importance of K2 for osteo recovery. And Dave has mentioned several times that collagen is very important for bone health. I’d also say that if your not on the Bulletproof diet or the SCD diet then you are harming yourself.

      • JT

        Thanks for the feedback Steve,

I’m now taking Vit, D3, K2, I will try out collagen and magnesium. I’m on the Bulletproof diet now, its made such a huge difference. I’m going get a vibration plate as well to strengthen the bone. I will keep an update of my progress

    • Rod

      Hey JT,

I recommend you to test your D3 level before you start taking doses. Also D to calcium ratio is important along with magnesium. You should take a WellnessFX test or something similar to see your current state. Good luck!

      • JT

Thanks for that Rod, I did check my level D levels before taking D3 and they were low now there back up after taking D. I’m yet to find a good calcium tablet, everytime I take caltrate I it flushes out of me like diarrhea. :) I will look into the Australian verison of WellnessFX

  • Hurting

What about diverticulitis…I’ve had it for a few years. I don’t want to have surgery, should I be eating your way?

    • http://www.facebook.com/Steve.M.Wright Steve Wright

@disqus_6YvE00IHvC:disqus yes, Dave’s Bulletproof diet will work great for helping to reduce inflammation and immune system regulation both of which are huge in Diverticulitis. On our SCDlifestyle site there are many who were suffering from this and see amazing transformations using diet and supplements. Give one of our diets a try what do you have to lose?

I’m finding this site extremely useful, thank you.
    I have 2 questions.
    1. about hemp protien – I do not seem to be able to tolerate dairy and had to quit whey. I started using a hemp protien powder (from Manitoba Harvest) in a breakfast drink, probably 4 days a week. I combine it with a little powdered green tea and a spoonful of turmeric, sweetened with some stevia and vanilla, and toss in some frozen berries. What is your take on hemp protien powder or hemp foods in general?
    2. I have been sprouting a broccolli, clover, red cabbage and cress mix in the winter for a few years and eating this on a regular basis. I do this at home in a glass jar. I often eat it on rye crackers (Wasa bread) 2 or 3 pieces with almond or hempseed butter, with avacado or tomato. Is this ok? I have recently heard some things about sprouted foods being bad for you. Do you know much about this?
Once again, I really enjoy the podcast and site.
